Preview: Regional stars gather for Central American and Caribbean Games

Some of the Americas' biggest archery stars will head to the Dominican Republic this week as Santo Domingo hosts the centenary edition of the Central American and Caribbean Games.

The 2026 edition marks a historic milestone as the Central American and Caribbean Games celebrate their centenary, 100 years after the inaugural event in 1926. More than 6,000 athletes from 37 delegations will compete across 40 sports in the 25th edition of the regional multi-sport event. 

The archery competition takes place from 24-29 July at the Parque del Este Archery Range. The tournament also carries world ranking status, with valuable ranking points on offer alongside regional honours.

Mexico will field a strong team led by Paris 2024 recurve women's team bronze medallists Alejandra Valencia Trujillo and Ana Paula Vazquez Flores, world number one Andrea Maya Becerra Arizaga, Sebastian Garcia Flores and Matias Grande.

Colombia's Sara Lopez, and El Salvador's Roberto Hernandez, one of the region's most decorated compound archers, are also among the leading contenders. 

Away from the competition field, Hernandez has already made headlines after being named one of El Salvador's flag bearers for the opening ceremony. The reigning Central American and Caribbean Games compound champion will make his fifth consecutive appearance at the event.

The competition also provides another important opportunity for athletes from across Central America and the Caribbean to test themselves against the region's best as the international season continues.
