Preview: Over 200 archers set to compete at biggest-ever Copa Merengue
The largest edition of Copa Merengue to date is set to take place this week, as more than 200 archers from across the Americas arrive in Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic.
A total of 216 athletes from 24 countries are registered to compete in the 10th edition of the world ranking tournament – an increase of more than 60 compared to last year’s field of 154. The 2023 event also served as a qualifier for the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.
Although the next Pan Am Games won’t take place until 2027, valuable world ranking points are on offer this week in Santo Domingo as athletes jostle for positions in full swing of the outdoor season.
Running alongside Copa Merengue at Parque del Este is a qualification event for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games, also set to take place in Santo Domingo next year. Not all archers entered in Copa Merengue will compete in the regional qualifier.
Two of last year’s winners – compound woman Paola Ramirez Gonzalez of Puerto Rico and recurve man Thomas Flossbach of Guatemala – return to defend their titles.
World number one Andrea Becerra of Mexico also headlines the field in the compound women’s event. She’ll be aiming to continue her fine form after securing a second stage win on the 2025 Hyundai Archery World Cup circuit in Antalya just over a week ago.
