Two women tie Olympic record as YUN (KOR) advances

 YUN Ok-Hee (KOR) and Jennifer NICHOLS (USA) tied the Olympic 12-arrow record, scoring 114 out of a potential 120 points in the Women's Individual matches at the Olympic Green Archery Field on Tuesday. The good form did not continue for NICHOLS (USA) however, being eliminated for the competition in her next match.
Top seeded archers, PARK Sung-Hyun (KOR), JOO Hyun-Jung (KOR) and Khatuna NARIMANIDZE (GEO) advanced easily to the 1/8 Elimination Round.
In the afternoon session, NICHOLS (USA) tied the Olympic record in her 1/32 Elimination match, but lost to Nami HAYAKAWA (JPN) on the very last arrow of their 1/16 Elimination match.
Archers of note who advanced to the 1/8 Elimination Round include Mariana AVITIA (MEX), Naomi FOLKARD (GBR), Khatuna LORIG (USA), Berengere SCHUH (FRA) and ZHANG Juan Juan (CHN).
At 14, AVITIA (MEX), the youngest archer at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, showed age is no barrier to Olympic success when she beat Malgorzata CWIENCZEK (POL) in the 1/16 Elimination Round by one point, 110-109. AVITIA's Mexican teammate, Aida ROMAN (MEX) also advanced.
In the only match that featured teammates, Naomi FOLKARD (GBR) defeated Charlotte BURGESS (GBR) 110-96 in the 1/16 Elimination Round. Earlier BURGESS, the No. 40 seed, surprised the Chinese fans when she took out GUO Dan (CHN), the No. 25 seed, 106-104.
Notable losers include YUAN Shu Chi (TPE), Natalia VALEEVA (ITA), and Alison WILLIAMSON (GBR).
