More rain... but the World Field Championship is all set for a thrilling finale
Llwynypia
As the championship moved to the National Museum of Wales, at St Fagans in Cardiff, two elimination sessions became one when the course became unsafe because of the unceasing downpour.
What it meant was that the top four archers from the first session went through to the semi-finals, rather than, as scheduled, the top eight going through to a second session, and the top four from emerging from that. "Once again, it's frustrating, but what can you do?," said chairman of the organising committee Jean Howells. "The most important thing, above all else, is the well being of the archers and officials, and the courses simply weren't safe to continue. Simple as that."
There will be no home interest in any of Saturday's semi-final and medal matches, with Chris White and Lucy Holderness, in the men's and women's compound tournaments respectively, going agonisingly close - both finished in fifth place.
Recurve Men
There was a surprise in the men's recurve, when defending champion Michele Frangilli dropped out in 14th place. Instead, there is the prospect of an all-Germany final, as Andreas Heuwing takes on Japan's Yuki Sakaeyama in the semis, while Sebastian Rohrberg faces Vic Wunderle of the USA.
Recurve Women
Another surprise in the women's recurve, as British Olympic archer Naomi Folkard missed out on a place in the semi-finals. After finishing second in both qualification days, she had to settle for sixth place in the elimination round. Jessica Tomasi, of Italy, who qualified in top place, finished ahead of her rivals yet again, and now takes on Belgium's Marina Prelipcean for a place in the final. Sweden's Elin Kattstrom faces Lisa Unruh of Germany in the other women's recurve semi-final.
Compound Men
In the men's compound, defending champion Morgan Lundin's hopes of a successful defence of his title ended when he finished in 9th place on Friday. The USA took the top two places, and Rod Menzer now takes on Denmark's Niels Baldur, while Dave Cousins goes up against Frenchman Stephane Dardenne for a place in the final.
Compound Women
Jamie Van Natta of the United States remains firm favourite in the women's compound tournament, and next up for her, in the semi-finals, is Inge Enthoven of the Netherlands. In the other semi, it's Sweden against Finland, as Ulrika Sjowall takes on Anne Laurila. Defending champion Silke Hoettecke finished down in 15th place.
Barebow Men
In the men's barebow, reigning champion Giuseppi Seimani of Italy was one point off a top four finish, but while he misses out, another Italian, Sergio Massimo Cassiani takes on Sweden's Mikael Olsson in the semi-finals. Mathias Larsson, also of Sweden, faces Germany's Ladislav Voboril.
Barebow Women
Italy's Luciana Pennacchi is the only defending champion who has made it through to the last four. She now takes on the in-form Annika Ahlund for a place in the women's barebow final, while Manja Conrad of Germany takes on the USA's Becky Nelson-Harris in the other semi.
