Individuals from seven countries will shoot the junior finals
Kundu-Antalya
As of the quarter-final matches, the archers shoot four ends of three arrows. The pace is different and it increases the pressure on these young athletes. Moreover, a gusty wind picked up a bit this morning, which makes the aiming more difficult. We asked Denise PARKER (USA) about the effect of the wind: “Definitely, a gusty wind makes it more difficult than a stable wind. You have to watch for the wind but you should not be disturbed by it. In any case, you have to pick up your spot on the target and commit to your shot. If you hesitate, then your arrow may end just about anywhere.” PARKER was the first Junior Women World Champion in 1991 and the youngest Olympic medallist in the history in 1988. She will manage the organisation of the Youth World Championships 2009 in Ogden (USA). Recurve Junior Men After another high score in the quarter-final (115), the run of no. 1 seed Massimilliano MANDIA (ITA) ended in the semis when he only achieved 100 points. He could never overcome a bad start (23 points in the first end). The door to the final was wide open for Rodrigo LASTRA (MEX) who will meet another Italian. In the other semi-final, the no. 2 seed Luca MELOTTO defeated M. I. ABD RAHIM (MAS), 108-104. Recurve Junior Women With a score of 105-104, the no. 1 seed Inna STEPANOVA (RUS) defeated the 2006 Cadet World Champion Jane WALLER (AUS) in a big quarter-final. However the Russian could not handle another promising archer Pranitha VARDHINENI (IND) in the semis. The Indian won 109-108 and will meet the surprising Mikie ZUSHI (JPN) in the final. To get there, the Japanese respectively beat Nina MYLCHENKO (UKR), 104-100, and LE Chieh-Ying (TPE), 102-95. Compound Junior Men The no. 29 qualifier M. J. KROGSHEDE (DEN) continued his amazing run when he beat Adam GALANT (USA), 111-110 in the quarter, and Guy PHILLIPS (AUS) 115-108. In the final he will play against the local hero, the no. 22 qualifier Demir ELMAAGACLI (TUR). The Turk won 116-110 against Leandro ROJAS (VEN) in the quarter-final. ELMAAGACLI then had a thrilling semi-final against Simon ROUSSEAU (CAN). The Turk was trailing 27-29, 55-57. He tied it at 84-84 and finally won 113-111! Compound Junior Women The no. 1 Kendal NICELY (USA) had an impressive semi-final when she was almost perfect for a long time. She led all the time, 30-29, 59-57, 89-86 and clinched the high level match against Camille BOUFFARD-DEMERS (CAN) with 117-114. She will meet another American, Samantha PRUITTE (USA) who prevailed 113-103 in her semi-final against Sabine SAUTER (GER). The junior finals will take place on Sunday as of 15:30 local time.
