Cadet Champions look already to Youth Olympic Games in Singapore
Kundu-Antalya
The Compound Cadet Women took the field early on Sunday morning to start the last day of finals. The cadets shot 4 ends of three arrows at 60 meters. They alternate for each arrow. Please read below our live commentaries for each match. Recurve Cadet Men Gold Medal: KIM Joo Wan (KOR) – KIM Hyun (KOR) It was Mr. KIM vs. Mr. KIM, or some said big KIM vs. little KIM. Moreover, KIM means “who” in the Turkish language. What is certain is that these two young gentlemen will no longer be “nobodies” in the archery world after the fantastic shooting they have displayed here in Antalya-Kundu (TUR). They won the team gold, set new World Records and now they are facing each-other for gold in the Recurve Cadet Men Final! KIM Hyun started really well with a 10-10 and a 9 just outside the 10 ring. He continued with 10-9-10 and led 58-54. He had a slightly bad arrow in the third end with 10-8-9 but was still leading 85-82. His opponent KIM Joo Wan applied pressure on the last end with a perfect 30 but KIM Hyun matched it with a perfect 30 of his own to win the match 115-112 becoming the new World Champion! Bronze Medal: Hemanta BASUMATARY (IND) – SHIN Jae Hun (KOR) Could BASUMATARY prevent an all-Korean podium? The Indian started well with a 29 and a 28 taking the lead, 57-56. However SHIN came back with a 10-10-9 and tied the match at 85-85. With only three arrows to go, both archers shot a 9, and both followed it with a 10. It came down to the last arrow. SHIN shot first and scored 9 points. BASUMATARY could only manage a 7. It will be an all-Korean podium! SHIN won 113-111.
Recurve Cadet Women
Gold Medal: Tatiana SEGINA (RUS) – LIN Shih Chia (TPE)
Recap: in individual finals matches, archers shoot 4 ends of 3 arrows. They have 30 seconds to shoot each arrow and alternate shooting after each shot. LIN had the best start taking the lead 29-28 but she struggled in the second end with 8-8-7. SEGINA scored a 29 with her next three arrows to put her in the lead 57-52 and never let it go. She clinched the gold 113-108!
Bronze Medal: Lidiia SICHENIKOVA (UKR) – Marianna AVITIA (MEX)
There was only a slight wind this morning, but the occasional gust seemed to be strong enough to affect the archer’s arrows. SICHENIKOVA, making her first appearance on the world scene, missed out on a team bronze medal yesterday. Her opponent, AVITIA, placed 8th at the recent Olympic Games in Beijing, confirming her place among the world’s elite. AVITIA did not start well with an 8-6-9 and was trailing in the match 23-28. She came back in the second end to close the gap to two points 51-53. SICHENIKOVA responded aggressively with 10-9-8 and extend her lead again to 80-76. Although AVITIA finished with 9-9-10 it was too little too late. SICHENIKOVA won the bronze 106-104.
Compound Cadet Men
Gold Medal: Joey HUNT III (USA) – DI BENEDETTO (ITA)
HUNT has had an amazing tournament so far, including a victory in a three arrow shoot-off in the quarter-finals and another difficult match in the semi-finals. It seemed he didn’t want to miss a rendezvous with destiny. He started the match with 29 and 29 to take the lead 58-55. DI BENEDETTO had a lot of 9s all surrounding the 10 ring. HUNT won the match 117-110 capturing both the team and individual 2008 Cadet World Championship titles!
Bronze Medal: Yiftach SWERY (NZL) – James HIRTH (AUS)
HIRTH never gave his opponent a chance! He started with a perfect 30, then 29 and another 29. In the meantime SWERY shot 28, 27 and a perfect 30. The Australian led 88-85 and closed the match with a final score 116-112.
Compound Cadet Women
Gold Medal: Kailey JOHNSTON (USA) – Ekaterina KOROBEYNIKOVA (RUS)
This was an individual rematch of the gold team final yesterday, which the USA won. JOHNSTON had a strong start with 10-10-9 while KOROBEYNIKOVA could only manage 9-8-9. JOHNSTON kept her lead through the second end 56-54. Then the Russian applied pressure shooting 10-10-9. But the American responded with 10-10-10, which proved to be too much for KOROBEYNIKOVA. With her 114-111 victory, JOHNSTON earned both team and individual 2008 Cadet World Champion titles!
Bronze Medal: Matea KOLAREK (CRO) – G. J. TREVINO (MEX)
This is the first match of the last day of the finals! The full stands, cameras and loud cheering will certainly place pressure on these young athletes. However, you would not know it in this match as TREVINO started strong with two ends of 29 and took a 58-57 lead at the half. KOLAREK struggled in the third end scoring 9-9-8 and trailed 83-86. The Croatian came back to apply some pressure in the last end scoring 10-10-9, but TREVINO responded on her last arrow with a 10 to clinch bronze 114-112!
