22 February 2009 - New Zealand Archer joins World Elite

New Zealand Archer joins World Elite Auckland (NZL) - 22 February 2009  On 22 February 2009, Stephen CLIFTON of Mt Green Archery Club in Auckland joined the very exclusive world-wide group of archers to break the 1400 points barrier for the FITA Round.   On a day in Auckland’s Cornwall Park which had rain, gusty winds and some fine spells, CLIFTON smashed his own New Zealand record to join the tiny handful of archers who have broken through this mental and physical barrier, scoring a superb 1403 points.

The possible number of points for the FITA Round is 1440. That means every single arrow of the 144 shot has to hit the centre of the gold target.

The 1400 barrier has always been considered to be the near impossible dream and over the last three years fewer than ten people in the world have achieved it.

CLIFTON is working hard towards selection for the New Zealand team for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010 where he has designs on the gold medal. Shooting scores like this in less than perfect conditions sends a message to his rivals that he will be a force to be reckoned with.
