Lausanne
Kristofer SCHAFF (USA)
Compound Men
A match with four shoot-offs! No one had ever seen this before! It happened in Rzeszow in the first compound men’s elimination round between Morten BOE (NOR) and Jose Ignacio CATALAN (ESP). Tied at 117 after twelve arrows, the Norwegian and the Spaniard had to go on to a tie-break to decide on the winner. Again tied after the first and second shoot-offs, their third arrows were so close that the judges could not say which was closest to the centre... Therefore, BOE and CATALAN shot a fourth tie-breaker and the Spaniard’s arrow was finally just a little bit better that the Norwegian’s. A few upset in 1/16 elimination with thedefending world champion Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA)—seeded no. 4—conceding a surprising defeat against no. 29 Vladimir FEDOSOV (RUS). The 2007 outdoor world champion and 2008 World Cup winner Dietmar TRILLUS (CAN) also suffered an early defeat against Antonio TOSCO (ITA). The 2008 World Cup silver medallist Patrizio HOFER (SUI) was also kicked out in the first round by Pierre Alain DELOCHE (FRA).
Perfect score (120) for the American Chance BEAUBOUEF (no. 5 seed) who beat the Spaniard CATALAN in 1/8 elimination. The latter lost this match without having anything to be ashamed of, as he scored 119. The no. 1 and 2 seeds Dominique GENET (FRA) and Jesse BROADWATER (USA) went through, while the Britton Duncan BUSBY (3) was defeated by his teammate James BINGHAM (14). After defeating the reigning World Cup winner TRILLUS in the previous round, the Italian Sergio PAGNIwas stopped by his fellow countryman TOSCO.
The two Americans BEAUBOUEF and BROADWATER won their quarterfinals rather easily against the Russian FEDOSOV (119-115) and the French DELOCHE (119-117). The two other quarterfinal matches were tighter. The no. 1 seed GENET won against the Dane DAMSBO only at the very last arrow, 118-117. The Italian TOSCO needed two shoot-offs to get rid of the Britton BINGHAM.
In semi-final, BEAUBOUEF put off the no. 1 seed GENET with a perfect match of 120 points. With 117, the Frenchman could only admit defeat. The gold final on Sunday will be 100% American with BROADWATER reaching his teammate after beating TOSCO 119-116. The Italian will face GENET for the bronze medal.
Compound Women All favourites and top seed ladies passed through the first round in the compound women’s category. Seeded no. 1, the American Mary HAMM (ZORN) shot 117 points in the 1/16 eliminations to beat Anne LAURILA (FIN). Her teammates, Holly LARSON and Erika ANSCHUTZ, beat Ivana BUDEN (CRO) and Maja MARCEN (SLO), respectively. The Russians also proved present with Anna KAZANTSEVA (no. 4) qualifying for the 1/8 elimination round, as well as Albina LOGINOVA (5) and Sofia GONCHAROVA (7). The first non American or Russian archer, the Frenchwoman Pascal LEBECQUE (6), was also through.
HAMM tied her own perfect 120 world record in the second round against Nicky HUNT (GBR). While no. 2 and 3 Americans LARSON and ANSCHUTZ also qualified, the no. 4 and 5 seeds from Russia KAZANTSEVA and LOGINOVA tripped over no. 13 and 12, respectively, Lucy HOLDERNESS from Great Britain and Jelena BABININA from Lithuania. Only GONCHAROVA survived this round for Russia.
The semi-finalists will be only English speaking ladies. The US team members HAMM, LARSON and ANSCHUTZ, comfortably went through the quarterfinals against SOEMOD (DEN), GONCHAROVA (RUS) and LEBECQUE (FRA). The last quarterfinals was a lot closer with three shoot-off arrows needed to decide on the winner between BALBININA (LTU) and Holderness (GBR). After two 10s each, the last 9 by the Britton was closer to the centre than the Lithuanian’s.
With a gold and silver medal already on the men’s side (BEAUBOUEF and BROADWATER will face each other in Compound Men), the US team will harvest at least two more medals thanks to their ladies HAMM and LARSON, who qualified for the gold medal match on Sunday. They might even add another one to theircollectionas ANSCHUTZ will fight for bronze against the British lady HOLDERNESS.
Compound Junior Men In this category, the top 3 archers—Garrett ABERNETHY (USA), Jonathan FRIBERG (SWE) and Luca FANTI (ITA)—reachedthe semi-finals. Seeded no. 1, ABERNETHY, had to go through a shoot-off in the quarterfinal against no. 8 Andreas DARUM (DEN).
