22 June 2009 - 1st tournament ever organised in Montenegro

1st tournament ever organised in Montenegro Podgorica (MNE) – 22 June 2009  On last Sunday 14 June 2009, the Montenegro Archery Association (AAM) organised the first ever outdoor archery tournament in the history of Montenegro. This event followed FITA rules and was hosted by the Archery Club Podgorica. Twenty-seven archers from nine clubs from Montenegro and Serbia participated in the recurve and compound divisions.   This event was the result of recent efforts of archers in Montenegro to promote the sport in their country, strengthen the organisational capacity and infrastructure and provide a good oportunity for media attention for archery in Montenegro—to inform about this sport and involve more people in it. It was one of the targeted goals in the programme of the AAM for the current year.    Archers from clubs in Montenegro and Serbia gathered to compete. The qualification round of 2x70m (72 arrows) was shot at 70m. Tough a sunny and warm day, a strong unsteady wind gust was blowing across the field during the event. However, archers managed to keep control and shoot the round, with solid score for such conditions. All participants were qualified for the elimination round—an Olympic round.   In the recurve men's division, the medals were won by experienced archers: gold for Mihailo SEKULIC (SRB), silver for Srdjan TEKIC (SRB), and bronze for Milovan VUJIC (SRB).     In compound men, the gold medal was won by the favourite, national team member of Serbia Danilo MIOKOVIC, who showed a solid performance in strong wind. He beat the local Milan SEKULARAC—also international competitor—who settled for silver. The bronze match brought a surprise with victory for the local athlete Boris CORSOVIC, who defeated Damir VICKOVIC from Serbia in an exciting bronze match.   In recurve team event, 1st place was taken by the experienced team of Pancevo (SRB), in front of the team of Nis (SRB) 2nd and the local team of the Kotor city club 3rd. In the compound team event, the local club of Podgorica took gold, the Pancevo club (SRB) the silver and the Herceg Novi club from Montenegro bronze.   The tournament was followed by three TV stations from Montenegro, including the state TV house RTVCG, who made a professional, solid coverage of the event in the "StudioSport" newscast coverage of sport events on the national television.     The competition went in a very good atmosphere, and the organisers intend to make it become traditional every year. All participants of this year's first edition congratulated the host and said they would compete at the Montenegro Open next year. The organisers will try to bring even more anchers from other regions next year (Croatia, Slovenia).
