14 July 2009 - Nikhil KANHAI (TRI): “The camp helped me break my personal best!”

Nikhil KANHAI (TRI): “The camp helped me break my personal best!” Ogden (USA) – 14 July 2009  Nikhil KANHAI from Trinidad and Tobago is one of the young archers who attended the recent training camp of the Commonwealth at the USA Olympic Center in Chula Vista (CVOTC), California. The camp was directed by FITA Development and Education Director Pascal COLMAIRE. Nikhil competed in the recurve men’s qualifications in Ogden and shares his experience.   How would you describe your experience at the training camp in Chula Vista? We learnt a lot. The camp gave me a lot more of an insight into archery. I learnt about various aspects—both technical and mental aspects—of archery. American archer Tyler SCHARDT gave us insight into his archery and his experience. The coaches from the United States Guy KRUEGER and Ginger HOPWOOD were training coordinators. They helped a lot, along with Pascal COLMAIRE.   What do you think are the biggest benefits of the camp? It increases my knowledge of the sport, and also increases my archery skills overall. Here in qualifications I was able to control myself better. At the camp I learnt how to relax for the competition. This helped me shoot better. I would like to attend other camps in the future if I have the opportunity.   You broke your personal best here. How do you explain this performance? I was not expecting such a performance! Of course the camp helped, both from a mental and technical point of view. In order to keep improving, I need to train more on both these aspects. I always need to train more and have the confidence that I can succeed.   What are your goals here in Ogden and for the future? I have achieved my goal: I did my personal best here and gained new experience! In the future I want to be able to shoot over 1200 in the FITA Round and attend many other international competitions. I want to do well at them and maybe one day qualify for the Olympics.   How did you start archery? I started archery through my father, who knew my coach and wanted me to get involved in the sport. So we went to training one day, and then kept going every Sunday… I liked it from the beginning. I was 15 then, so I have been practicing for one and a half years. I still have the same coach as in the beginning. Now I train five days a week, each time for approximately 1.5 hours.   What are your training conditions at home? I have good coaches in my country who know enough about archery and are experienced. In my country I train in two different areas: one that is windy and one that is not. Also in Trinidad and Tobago we have one rainy and one dry season. Because of these special weather conditions I have gained good experience.   Thank you Nikhil, and good luck for the future!   Vanahé ANTILLE FITA Communication
