Recurve Junior Men
Three upsets in this category’s quarterfinals! The No. 8 seed Rick VAN DER VEN (NED) (photo) took out the No. 1 seed JANG Chaehwan (KOR)! The Dutchman held onto a 1-point lead at the end, from 84-82 after nine arrows to 112-111 for the final score. The No. 13 seed XING Yu (CHN) beat the No. 5 seed Atana DAS (IND), 86-83, 113-111. The No. 11 Heorhiy IVANYTSKYY (UKR) eliminated the No. 3 seed KIM Woojin (KOR). The Ukrainian pulled a comeback victory 86-89, 116-115! The final favourite standing, the No. 2 seed SUNG Wookyeong (KOR) prevailed over Pawan XALXO (IND), 114-108.
In the semifinal, VAN DER VEN kept on going! He had a tight match against XING, but the Dutchman secured victory at the end: 27-27, 57-56, 85-82 and 111-109. Being one of the few Koreans remaining across all categories, SUNG shot a very good match. He led 29-26, 59-55, 88-83 to earn a spot in the gold medal match with a final score of 115-109 over IVANYTSKYY.

Another Korean athlete was knocked out in the quarterfinals. The No. 1 seed HANG Gyeonghee lost against the No. 8 CHEN Yeqing (CHN) 79-80, 106-109. In a match between the underdogs, Marion BARDARY (FRA) got the better of Zoe GOBBELS (BEL) 108-97. The two other Koreans had difficulties but they prevailed. LEE Yujin took the advantage over Tatiana SEGINA (RUS) in the last end, 82-82, 109-108. YU Jangmi had to go through a shoot-off against LU Siyi (CHN). The match was tied at 111-111. YU won 9-8 with the extra arrow.
The Chinese CHEN did not miss the opportunity to reach the gold medal match. She dominated BARDARY 28-26, 55-52, 81-78 to finish on 109-105. In the other semi-final, the Korean clash went to LEE. The match was tight: 29-29, 55-54 and 81-81 after three ends. LEE made the difference with her last three arrows, shooting a perfect 30 to clinch the match 111-109.
Compound Junior Men
The good run of the Adam ASHLEY (AUS), who beat the current world champion yesterday, came to an end against Ben CLELAND (USA). The American led 58-57 and shot almost perfectly until the end to clinch a 117-110 victory. His teammate Cody THOMPSON (USA) (photo) shot even better. He won 119 (!) -115 over Viktor LUNDSTROM (SWE). Jean PIZARRO was also one point off perfection! He had a 119-115 win over Claus FRANTZEN (DEN).The last semifinalist was F. J. VALVERDE (ESP). He beat Jacopo POLIDORI (ITA), 58-57, 87-86, 117-115.
The two strongest competitors of the morning confirmed it in the semifinal. THOMPSON beat the No. 1 seed CLELAND, 29-28, 59-57, 89-86 and 119-116. PIZARRO started his semifinal very well with two ends of 30 and 29. He had a 59-57 lead and held it to the end, 117-115.
Compound Junior Women
The fairy story of Matea KOLAREK (CRO), who beat the no. 1 seed yesterday, came to an end in the quarterfinal. She was beaten by Ekaterina KOROBEYNIKOVA (RUS) 107-115. Another Russian joined her in the semifinals. Svetlana CHERKASHNEVA beat K. S. MONTELLANO (MEX), 112-109. In the other quarterfinals, Inge VAN CASPEL (NED) beat Jenah SMITH (CAN) 114-109 and Kendal NICELY (USA) prevailed over Naomi MARTENS (BEL) 118-112.
One semifinal was a Russian clash and KOROBEYNIKOVA got the better of CHERKASHNEVA 29-27, 58-55, 85-82 and 114-111. The other semifinal turned out to be a clash of titans. VAN CASPEL and NICELY were tied at 28-28. Then they both shot two perfect ends of 30! The score was 88-88. In the last end, VAN CASPEL scored 29 points and it was just enough to beat NICELY’s 28. Final score: 117-116!
Recurve Cadet Men
The cadets also shot 4x3 arrows for the matches. However the targets are at 60m.
The leader from the qualifications, KIM Joo Wan (KOR), defeated Russia’s Konstantin SANZHITSYBIKOV, 112-109. Gaël PREVOST (FRA) and Antonio Hector SMITH (MEX) were tied after 9 arrows, 86-86. The young Mexican was more consistent in the end and won 113-115. In the other matches, MIN Taehong (KOR) took the advantage over Eugeny KIRKIN (RUS) 113-109, and Sanjay BORO (IND) was never in danger against Osman ESKICI (TUR), winning 112-101.
The final in this category will be 100% Korean! KIM defeated SMITH 26-26, 55-52, 82-81 and 111-110, while his teammate MIN left absolutely nothing to chance with BORO, scoring two 30-point ends for the win, 30-29, 59-57, 89-79 and 117-106.
Recurve Cadet Women
American Miranda LEEK couldn’t do anything against Deepika KUMARI (IND) and was defeated 104-115. JEON Hunyoung (KOR) won easily in her match against Polina RODIONOVA (UKR), 115-107. CHOI Youri (KOR) built a 5-point advantage over E. CHEOK (SIN) after 6 arrows, 84-79. She managed to stay in the lead despite a strong come-back from her opponent. CHOI won 115-114. The last Russian in this category, Sayana TSYREMPILOVA, upset Korea’s OH Damee 111-108.
The big surprise came from the Korean girls, who were unable to shoot at the level they had showed in the previous rounds. JEON was in the lead after the first end against KUMARI, 27-25 (photo). However, after a weak performance in the second end she trailed 54-55, 80-84, to finally lose the match 108-112. In the second semifinal, CHOI started with a perfect 30 against TSYREMPILOVA, who managed a good 29. The Korean then lost it all in the next end, trailing 50-57. She was never able to recover from that and lost to the Russian 96-110.
Compound Cadet Men
Mario CARDOSO (MEX) was simply too strong for Mike SCHLOESSER (NED): the Mexican won 118-114. The No. 4 seed Jaime van BARBIERI (AUS) shot against the No. 5 Simon MIKKELSEN (DEN). Van BARBIERI was the best in the end, winning 117-115. Alexander SAHI (USA) also won 117-115 against Mexico’s Adolfo MEDINA (MEX). Finally, Riley WHITING (USA) took an early lead over Keenan BROWN (CAN), 59-53 after 6 arrows, and won easily 117-112.
In the semifinals, CARDOSO led van BARBIERI 59-58 after the first two ends, but a weak performance in the second half of the match cost him the victory. Van BARBIERI won 29-29, 58-59, 87-85, 116-113. SAHI and WHITING battled in a 100% American duel to qualify for the final. The match was very close, SAHI having the best start over WHITING, 30-29, 59-58, then the Americans were tied at 87-87 and 116-116! Finally, SAHI defeated his teammate 10-9 in the shoot-off to advance to the gold-medal match!
Compound Cadet Women
The two Americans Paige PEARCE and Kayla HARMEYER fought in a close match, which PEARCE won 116-114. There was a tie from the beginning to the end between the No. 3 seed Toja CERNE (SLO) and the No. 6 Clara NIETO TALADRIZ (ESP): 29-29, 58-58, 86-86 and 115-115! Finally NIETO TALADRIZ was the best in shoot-off and advanced to the semifinal. In the two remaining matches, Jody VERMEULEN (NED) gave a good performance to defeat Rachel HUGHES (NZL) 29-29 58-55 86-84 114-111 and Stephanie SARAI SALINAS (MEX) prevailed over Viktoriya DYAKOVA (UKR), 117-114.
In the next round, SARAI SALINAS (photo) started perfectly with a 30 and stayed in the lead through to the end, defeating VERMEULEN 30-29, 58-57, 87-85, 114-113. PEARCE trailed NIETO TALADRIZ after the first end (27-28) but came back strongly to qualify for the final, 56-55, 85-83 and 113-110.
The tournament continues in the afternoon with the team competition.
