No surprise in junior with Korea in recurve and USA in compound

Here is a recap of our live commentaries!
Recurve Junior Men   Gold medal match: KOREA vs GREAT BRITAIN This is a big year for Korea as they will host the World Archery Championships in Ulsan early September. The junior and cadet teams wanted to show that the country is still on top of recurve archery at these Youth Championships.   In this match, both teams had an average start, 54-52 to Korea. Then Korea turned it up and missed gold only one more time during the remainder of the match. They shot ends of 57, 56 and 55 to complete a Korean sweep of the recurve titles. Gold for Korea, 222-205!   Bronze medal match: POLAND vs UKRAINE The teams did not have a good start, 48-46 for Poland. Both teams improved a bit in the second end and Poland kept a 1-point lead, 99-98.   Ukraine had the world record holder for an individual match for this category, Heorhiy IVANYTSKYY (UKR), in its ranks and came back strongly in the third end with 55 points to take the lead 153-150. However Poland managed to tie it at the end, 202-202.   In the tie-break Ukraine had 9-9-8 but Poland had a perfect 10-10-10 to clinch the bronze medal!  Recurve Junior Women   Gold medal match: KOREA vs CHINA This was some kind of a revenge match from the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games women’s final. Today in Ogden the wind continued to be tricky for the juniors and Korea took a small lead in the first end 53-50.   Korea was consistent shooting a 54 in the second and built a 10-point lead 107-97.   In the last twenty years, no team has ever closed a 10 point gap on Korea. The Chinese were not going to be the first ones and the Koreans clinched another gold medal, 218-205.   Bronze medal match: POLAND vs UKRAINE The Ukrainian team huddled tightly after the first end. They needed to regroup after they scored a low 43 points. The wind was tricky, sometimes blowing moderately and sometimes completely stopping. It was not easy for the archers to aim or counter-aim.   Poland led 52-43 after the first end and increased to 105-91 at the halfway mark.   Ukraine could simply not come back after such a deficit. Poland won the bronze medal as they did last year in Antalya, 209-198! Paula WYCZECHOWSKA was a member of the team on that occasion as well.    Compound Junior Men   Gold medal match: USA vs MEXICO The second Mexican-American duel of the day was as heated as the first one. The fans made a lot of noise in the stands! The American team gave them something to cheer for with a start of 89 points out of 90! At half time, the USA led 117-111!   The Americans kept going at pretty much the same pace in the next end and extended their lead to 174-167!   In the last end, the USA needed six 10s to break the world record held by the American team since the World Archery Youth Championships Merida 2006. They did not achieve it but they won gold with the impressive score of 229-222!   Bronze medal match: DENMARK vs CANADA The Danes took an early advantage in the first end, shooting 9-9-10-9-10-10 to lead Canada 57-51. They were as steady in the second end and increased their margin over the Canadians to 7 points, 114-107. A tie at 57 in the third end meant the Canadians still trailed by 7 points, 164-171. The Canadians could not compensate for this margin and Denmark easily clinched the bronze!  Compound Junior Women   Gold medal match: USA vs RUSSIA The first end was almost equal, 55-54, but the USA turned it on in the second end. They shot 10-9-9-10-10-10 to take a commanding lead 113-105.   Team USA returned two world champions from the World Archery Youth Championships Kundu-Antalya 2008: the already very experienced Kendal NICELY and Samantha PRUITTE. They are the current team world champions and they respectively earned gold and silver in individual last year. They kept on going strong! They actually only missed the gold ring twice in the match.   At the end the USA needed to finish with four 10s not only to clinch gold but to break the world record. They did! Victory 226-214, gold medal and world record!   Bronze medal match: ITALY vs MEXICO Italy took an early advantage in the first end 54-52, but they shot a 5 in the second end which allowed Mexico to tie the score at 104-104.   Italy took the advantage again in the third end, 159-156 but scored another low arrow in the last end, a 6! Mexico tied it again at 206-206 and the teams had to go to a shoot-off!   The three archers received 60 seconds more to shoot one arrow each. Mexico had a 9, an 8 and a dead centre 10 with two seconds remaining! Italy had 10, an 8 and 9 just a couple of centimetres off the 10-ring! Tied score again!   Mexico shot first again in the second extra end. A 9, a 10 and a 9 just out of the 10-ring! Italy started with a 9 and a 9 and the last shooter could not hold her nerves with an 8. Mexico won a thriller match in the second shoot-off, 28-26!   Vanahé ANTILLE / Didier MIEVILLE FITA Communication
