Recurve Cadet Men
As in the junior competition this morning, the favourites had a bye in the first round. In the 1/64 elimination round, Romania’s Florin PRELIPCEAN defeated Mathias GALBERG (DEN) 50-47, 102-98. Sopanut BOONPRASIT from Thailand trailed Jonathan COUTURE (CAN) 55-56 but then managed to build a solid margin for the win, 105-93. Nikolaj WULFF (DEN) trailed Juraj DUCHON (SVK) 51-54 in the first end but came back strongly in the second end to beat his opponent 105-103.
In the 1/32 elimination round the No. 1 seed KIM Joo Wan (KOR) won easily over Darren WALLACE (IRL) 57-44, 115-87. Alexandre CURCHOD (SUI) lost to Slovenia’s Klemen STRAJHAR 54-56, 110-112. Eugeni KIRKIN (RUS) and Hector Eduardo SANSORES (MEX) were close in the first end, scoring 55-54. The Russian was steadier in the second end and held on to win 111-108. No. 3 seed MIN Taehong (KOR) had only a 1-point advantage over PRELIPCEAN at 53-52, but finished strongly in the second end to win 109-103. Gaël PREVOST (FRA) shot the best score of the 1/32 round to beat WULFF 115-96.
The three Koreans qualified easily for the next round. Two Russians, KIRKIN and Konstantin SANZHITSYBIKOV, survived the 1/16 elimination round as well. Mitch DIELEMANS (GER) tied M. PAPAVASILEIOU (GRE) at 52-52 and was later able to claim a close victory, 105-104. Turkey’s Osman ESKICI took a slener lead against Daniel RAMIREZ (MEX), 53-52. He shot better in the second end, leaving no chance for his opponent and won 108-103.
KIM was very strong again in the 1/8 elimination round, defeating Mitch DIELEMANS (GER) 58-56 and 114-110. The first end was close in the match between Mangal HO (IND) and PREVOST, who were tied at 54-54. In the end the Frenchman shot better and won, 111-108. Hector Antonio SMITH (MEX) trailed Dmytro MARTYNOV (UKR) by 1 point, 49-50, but managed to come back and win the game by 1 point, 101-100. KIRKIN continued his winning ways with an easy victory over Atte JAUHIAINEN (FIN) 55-51, 106-96. Turkey’s Osman ESKICI was a surprise winner against the No. 2 seed PARK Yeonsu (KOR), whom he beat 110-103.
Recurve Cadet Women
In the 1/32 elimination round, Tze Rong Vanessa LOH from Singapore tied Tasia PLEUNE (BEL) 98-98 and shot a good 9 in the tie-breaker to defeat the young Belgian, who could manage only a 6. Ophélie GLEMET (FRA) and Sharadha VEMUNOORI (IND) were close in the first end at 48-49. The young Indian was more solid in the second half and won by 103-93. American Michelle GILBERT defeated Ariadni CHORTI (GRE) by a comfortable margin, 52-49 103-97, and Patricia SUHM (GER) beat Julia Claudia CHAVEZ (MEX), 52-49, 102-98. Of the two Alexandras from Slovakia, SISKOVA took the advantage over LONGOVA 101-89. Beijing 2008 Olympian Mariana AVITIA (MEX) trailed Joanne JIMENEZ (PUR) 53-55 but came back strongly to win 107-101.
Korea’s CHOI Youri was the star of the next round, scoring an impressive 60 in the first end to defeat SISKOVA 60-50, 115-100. AVITIA was never in danger against Alice INGLEY (AUS), whom she defeated 54-49, 108-101. Oyuna BOLOTOVA (RUS) had a good start, leading Joanna GORCZYCA (POL) 57-52. In the end the Russian won by a comfortable margin, 111-105. The other two Russians also qualified for the next round. Sayana TSYREMPILOVA beat Rina SUGIBAYASHI (JPN) 51-49, 102-94, and Kristina TIMOFEEVA easily eliminated GILBERT, 102-96. Miranda LEEK was the only American in the next round. She defeated Paola DI LORENZO (ITA) 50-47, 100-96.
In the 1/8 elimination round, AVITIA couldn't do anything against CHOI, who repeated her great score of the previous round for the win, 115-106. Elizabeth CHEOK from Singapore eliminated Ukraine's SICHENIKOVA, 108-106. In a very close Russian dual, TSYREMPILOVA took the advantage over her teammate BOLOTOVA 106-105. LEEK from the USA shot her best performance of the day when it counted most to defeat TIMOFEEVA 109-98. Strong performances came from the last two Korean girls. No. 1 seed JEON Hunyoung defeated GLEMET 113-95 while her teammate OH Damee beat Alejandra VALENCIA (MEX) 112-106.
Compound Cadet Men
Namibia’s Gunther WOORTMAN and Raimund ROHRMULLER who attended the training camp for youngsters directed by FITA in Chula Vista (USA) last week, put in good performances in the 1/32 elimination round today. However, it was not enough to qualify for the next round. WOORTMAN lost 103-110 to Diego NIETO TALADRIZ (ESP) while ROHRMULLER lost by only 1 point to Josh LUEDTKE (CAN). In a 100% South African duel, Jacobus LOOTS defeated his teammate Craig STEVENS 116-114.
Mario CARDOSO (MEX) trailed F. DUFRESNE (CAN) 55-57 and came back strongly in the second end to win 116-112. M. SCHLOESSER (NED) was 2 points behind LAWRENCE (AUS) at 56-58, but shot 59 in the second half and won 115-113. S. HANSEN (DEN) and Sudhakar Kumar PASWAN (IND) tied at 57-57 and again at 113-113. HANSEN scored a 9 in the shoot-off, but it was not enough to beat PASWAN who finished with a perfect 10. American SAHI trailed 57-58 in the first end but still managed to beat S. TAYLOR (GBR) by 1 point, 114-113. Nikolay AVDEEV (RUS) started strongly against J. SALMON (AUS) and won the match 58-56, 114-111.
The leader of the qualification round, Nicklas FRIESE went down in the 1/8 elimination round against CARDOSO! After a bad start FRIESE trailed 53-55 and was never able to catch up to his opponent, who won 111-109. SCHLOESSER was very steady, defeating Diego MARTINEZ (VEN) 59-54, 115-108. As in the previous round, PASWAN found himself in a tie, 56-56, in his match against Simon MIKKELSEN (DEN). This time the young Indian was beaten, 111-113. Also tying at 56-56 in the first end were James van BARBIERI (AUS) and Dmitry KOZHIN from Russia. Finally, BARBIERI claimed the victory at 113-111.
Compound Cadet Women
No. 1 seed Kailey JOHNSTON (USA) easily defeated Georgina BROWN (GBR), 58-49, 118-101. In a very close match, Aleksandra VALD (RUS) and New Zealand’s Rachel HUGHES tied at 57-57. HUGHES finally won by 1 point, 113-112. Aja JANEZIC (SLO) trailed Jody VERMEULEN (NED) 54-56 and lost 108-110. Two girls from India fought for a spot in 1/8 elimination round: Jayalakshmi SARIKONDA defeated Nilam KUMARI, 56-55, 113-107. No. 2 seed Paige PEARCE from the USA put in a good performance and beat LUI Wing Lam (HKG) 58-56, 115-106.
Surprisingly, the favourite JOHNSTON did not make it to the quarterfinals after losing 55-59 and 110-112 to HUGHES. Viktoriya DIAKOVA from the Ukraine took an early lead over Gabriela Yazmin TREVINO (MEX), 57-55, and stayed in first place through to the end, 111-110. Toja CERNE (SLO) trailed Tegan HEALEY (AUS) but managed to come back in the second end to win 111-110. SARIKONDA and Kayla HARMEYER (USA) were tied at 56-56, but the American shot better in the next half to win 112-110. Finally, Cassandra VALLIERES (CAN) took the initial lead against PEARCE, but was unable to maintain the same level in the second end and PEARCE claimed the victory 111-109.
