Compound Bracket analysis

 Dejan SITAR (SLO)
Individual qualifications sorted the match brackets. It means two things for the archers topping the rankings: They must be confident in the way they are shooting They should have an easier road to the title (shoot against weaker opponents)
Statistics clearly show that the higher seeds win more medals. They should at least reach the quarterfinals. Then it will be a matter of who is mastering all the parameters of a match when it matters the most. However, let’s put things in some perspective. The higher seeds may find another favourite that had a bad day in qualifications along the way. They may not hold their nerves during the tension of a match. They may simply have a bad, fatal match (or an opponent a great day). Everything is possible, so let’s look at some scenarios.
Compound Men WILDE was the only one to break 1400 points on the full FITA Round. However, he was only 19th at the 70m distance, the distance used for an elimination match. In fact, the top archer at this distance SITAR had 350 points, while WILDE and the 26th ranked archer Vladas SIGAUSKAS had 343 points. This is a 7-point gap over 36 arrows. If one adapts this gap to a 12-arrow match, it is 2.33 points. If one considers as well that dangerous archers like Sebastien BRASSEUR (FRA), Kevin TATARYN (CAN), Ruben OCHOA (MEX), Morten BOE (NOR), Dominique GENET (FRA), Patrizio HOFER (SUI) and even the current world champion Dietmar TRILLUS (CAN) are not part of these 26 archers (!), it shows why this category is the densest. As of the 1/16 eliminations (32 archers), the matches will be very, very tight.

WILDE has a lot of work ahead of him and moreover he did not get an easy bracket. The only good news is that he has a bye in the first round. Then he shoot against Wesley GATES (RSA) in the second, then Fred VAN ZUTPHEN (NED) or HOFER in the second, then possibly BRASSEUR in the third. In the quarterfinal, WILDE (if he is still alive in the competition), could come up against various strong contenders such as TATARYN, Pierre Julien DELOCHE and Dominique GENET (FRA) or Vladimir FEDOSOV (RUS).

In the second quarter of the bracket, the no. 5 seed Stephen CLIFTON (NZL) could shoot against SIGAUSKAS in the 1/16 elimination round then Roberval DOS SANTOS (BRA). He then could meet the current world champion TRILLUS or Paul TITSCHER (GER) in the quarterfinal. Another way to look at it: TRILLUS did not get such a hard draw.

The no. 3 seed Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA) has BOE and Martin DAMSBO (DEN) on his way to the quarterfinal. There he may have a very tough match against Peter ELZINGA (NED), Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA) or will it be against his teammate Rigoberto HERNANDEZ (ESA).

The no. 2 Dave COUSINS (USA) has archers like four time World Cup winner Sergio PAGNI (ITA), Leipzig 4th-placed Jose DUO (ESP) and Frank KARSENTY (ISR) in the bottom of the bracket. The athlete who survives this should meet Patrick COGHLAN (AUS) or Ruben OCHOA (MEX) or the best at 70 metres in qualifications, SITAR.

Linda OCHOA (MEX)Compound Women The no. 1 seed Linda OCHOA (MEX) also dominated the qualifications in Shanghai but she finished 4th at the end. Although this category is clearly not as dense as that of the men, the road to a potential gold medal is not easy. She should have either the former world champion Valerie FABRE (FRA) or youth world champion Kendal NICELY (USA) first. If OCHOA survives this test, she could shoot against any of these real contenders in the quarterfinals: Laura LONGO, Anastasia ANASTASIO (ITA), Nicky HUNT (GBR), SEO Jung-Hee (KOR).

The current world champion Eugenia SALVI (ITA) only ended the qualifications in 37th place. She therefore has a tough road. Martina FLORES (VEN) in the 1/32 eliminations, then SEOK JI-Hyun (KOR), then the winner will probably challenge Camille DEMERS-BOUFFARD (CAN). In the quarterfinals, the potential opponents are Pascale LEBECQUE (FRA), Almendra OCHOA (MEX) and Andrea WEIHE (GER).

Five big names are in the third quarter of the draw: Ivana BUDEN (CRO), Camilla SOEMOD (DEN), Gladys WILLEMS (BEL), Diane WATSON (USA) and Melanie MIKALA (GER).

The last quarter is considered to be as strong as the first. On one side the potential quarterfinalists are KWON Oh-Hyang (KOR), Luzmary GUEDEZ, Olga BOSCH (VEN), and Ekaterina KOROBEYNIKOVA (RUS). The archer who survives this group should come up against one of these: Erika ANSCHUTZ (USA), Nichola SIMPSON (GBR), Irina MARKOVIC (NED) or Albina LOGINOVA.

Compound women will shoot Saturday morning and the men on the afternoon.
