Three Awards for Archery in Great Britain
Lausanne – 8 November 2010
English Paralympic archers Danielle BROWN and John STUBBS have won prestigious awards at the 29th annual Commonwealth Sports Awards. Moreover, the GB National Series won the “Sporting Occasion of the Year” award at the Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire Sports Awards evening.
Dani BROWN photo, who became the first disabled athlete ever to compete for England in an able-bodied event in India, won the Outstanding Female Athlete with Disability award.
And Paralympic gold medallist and former world champion John STUBBS was awarded Outstanding Male Athlete with Disability.
“It is absolutely great news for Dani and John, and once again I am both delighted for them, and very proud,” said GB Paralympic Coach Tim HAZELL.
“They both thoroughly deserve such high profile recognition, and they have both worked very hard to get where they are today, and this is a reward of that.
“John won three medals at the European championships, and just missed out on qualification for the Commonwealth Games earlier in the year, but as ever he continues to compete and perform at the highest level.
“Dani’s achievements this year have been well documented, and not only did she qualify for the Commonwealths, she came back with a team gold medal.
“But yet again she has starred in Paralympic events, broken world records, and now, like John, is focussing on the London Paralympic Games in 2012.”
The awards were announced at a gala dinner at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham. The two archers were in good company, with Jamaican sprinter Usain BOLT picking up the outstanding male athlete award, and English heptathlon Jessica ENNIS the outstanding female award.
Jon NOTT received major award on behalf of Archery GB’s National Series Grand Final
The event, which was held at Leamington Spa, in the English Midlands, in September, was named the regional ‘Sporting Occasion of the Year’ at the Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire Sports Awards evening.
National Series organiser Jon NOTT right on photo accepted the award at a Gala Dinner, and said he was “absolutely delighted”.
“Actually, more than that,” beamed Jon, who came up with the format for the National Series, and launched it last year. “I’m not just delighted, I’m thrilled to bits, and I’m very proud.
“Being nominated for the award was very exciting; actually winning it is just unbelievable.
“We won it on the grounds of the running of the event, the organisation of it before and during the day itself, engaging local organisations in the event, and for giving local people the opportunity to be involved too, through the ‘have a go’ sessions we put on.
“And while it was a wonderful feeling to walk up and receive the award, I want to dedicate it to everyone who worked so hard to make the event the success it was.
“So many volunteers gave up their time to work tirelessly to make sure everything ran smoothly, and I cannot thank them enough.
“Then there are the archers who all performed brilliantly on the day, and gave us an exhibition of archery of the highest level.
“And a special ‘thank you’ too, to everyone who turned up on the day to support the event, and help give it a wonderful atmosphere.”
David SHERATT, chief executive of Archery GB, said he was thrilled to hear the news.
He said: "This is a personal tribute to Jon Nott, and the fantastic work he has put into making the Archery GB National Series the success it has become.
"But I would echo the comments of Jon, by adding my thanks, and praise, for everyone who puts in an enormous amount of hard work in making the Grand Final the fantastic day out it was."
World Archery would like to congratulate Dani BROWN, John STUBBS, Jon NOTT and the whole Archery GB organisation for these prestigious awards!
