Newcomers to challenge world champions at the Berlin Open

The BB-Berlin e.V. archery club will host its third annual “Berlin Open” from 14-16 December 2012. This international tournament is made possible through a successful partnership with supporters and sponsors, including the event’s main sponsor Win&Win.
Last year, 400 athletes from 30 different nations kicked off the event. The Berlin Open has quickly made a name for itself—and not just nationally, but also internationally. This year, over 500 athletes from 31 nations have registered. The principle behind this competition is to allow recreational sport to meet high-performance sport. Amateurs and newcomers will be competing on the shooting line alongside national and international archers for valuable prizes.
Several world-class archers are on the Berlin Open starting list. The top German archers who will compete are 2004 world field champion Sebastian ROHRBERG, 2012 world field champion and Olympian Elena RICHTER, 2009 indoor world champion Karina WINTER, world record holder Kristina BERGER, World Cup finalist Paul TITSCHER, world record holder Carlo SCHMITZ and defending Berlin Open champion Andrea WEIHE. Top international shooters such as European champion Rick VAN DER VEN (NED), European bronze medallist Thomas FAUCHERON (FRA), multiple world champion Natalia VALEEVA (ITA), team world champion Pia LIONETTI (ITA), world champion Albina LOGINOVA (RUS), world record holder Peter ELZINGA (NED), former World Cup Final winner Sergio PAGNI (ITA) as well as Martin DAMSBO (DEN) and Patrizio HOFER (SUI) will also be in attendance.
Archers will compete in the four international categories. The qualification rounds on 14-15 December will consist of 2 x 30 arrows at a distance of 18 metres. The best 32 archers in each class will qualify for the final. All the other archers will be entered in a secondary “second chance” tournament, along with the amateurs and newcomers, for an opportunity to win valuable prizes. In 2011 some of the newcomers gave seasoned archers a run for their money.
