Third Berlin Open a great success
Lausanne
Recurve Men Recent Face2Face winner Carlo SCHMITZ (GER) put on a tremendous display of accuracy again in the open round by shooting a cadet world record of 594, breaking his own record by two points. No surprise he was in the finals again. This time he faced Rick VAN DER VEN (NED) who placed fourth at the London Olympic Games. In a fierce battle and great show of accuracy, the two men took a run at the gold. Tying the first 3 sets (30-30, 30-30, 29-29) the match could have gone to any of the two. Carlo SCHMITZ then won the fourth set (5-3) needing just one point to take gold. In the final set the German shot a 29 leaving the door open for Rick but the Dutchman could only manage a 28 giving Carlo SCHMITZ the victory. Third place went to Camilo MAYR from Germany. Recurve Women To the delight of the home crowd, another local favourite was up for a gold medal. Lisa UNRUH (GER) had to defeat Korean CHUN Se Eun to give Germany their second win of the day. Lisa started strong with a 30 while CHUN could only manage 28 (2-0). Trailing by two, CHUN started the second set and shot a 30 against Lisa’s 28 (2-2). The Korean then never looked back and took a sprint to the finish, winning the next two and the gold medal (6-2). The bronze medal went to another Korean JANG Hye Jin who defeated Naomi FOLKARD. Compound Men In this class we saw two men who had been in many finals through the years. World Cup star Sergio PAGNI (ITA) and his opponent from Denmark, rising star Stephan HANSEN. The more experienced Italian opened the match with a maximum 30 against 29 for Stephan HANSEN (2-0). Sergio PAGNI also won the second set taking the match to a four point lead. By then Stephan HANSEN overcame his nerves and won the third set bringing it to 4-2. Both men tied in the next two sets giving Sergio PAGNI the two additional points needed to take the gold medal and another nudge on his belt. The third spot went to European indoor champion Ruben BLEYENDAAL from the Netherlands. He defeated his Dutch teammate Sander DOLDERMAN by 6-2. Compound Women Youngster Sarah SÖNNICHSEN from Denmark was up against none other than the reigning two time world champion Albina LOGINOVA (RUS). It did not seem to bother the Danish archer that she was shooting against a much more experienced athlete. Sarah SÖNNICHSEN kept her cool and went on to win the gold in a straight sets victory 6-0 (29-28, 29-28,29-27) leaving LOGINOVA with silver. The bronze medal went to top Dutch compounder Irina MARKOVIC who defeated miss WEITSCH from Germany.
