Some surprises at the recurve elimination rounds

Athletes from the 9th rank of qualifications shot the 1/48 and 1/24 elimination matches, while the top 8 have a bye into tomorrow’s 1/16 elimination round. Most of the favourites easily made it through the first two rounds.
On the men’s side, world No 3 Luis ALVAREZ (MEX/38), winner of the Mexican Grand Prix and Arizona Cup this year, suffered against Vedran ORLIC (CRO/75) in the 1/48 elimination round. Despite trailing 1-3, ALVAREZ came back and took the lead 5-3, but his opponent tied at 5-5 to force a shoot-off, which ALVAREZ won with the arrow closer to centre. The Mexican archer then faced European champion Rick VAN DER VEN. The Mexican opened the match with 30 points and went on to win 6-2.
Several upsets occurred in the 1/24 round. Local Turkish archer Cevdet DEMIRAL (No 59) was the surprise of the round when he defeated Olympic silver medallist from London, the Japanese Takaharu FURUKAWA (photo). Thomas AUBERT (FRA/36) started his match with 30 points to upset another favourite, former World Cup stage winner Jayanta TALUKDAR (IND/29) 6-2. Taylor WORTH (AUS/21) lost to Bernardo OLIVEIRA (BRA/44). Finally, Joe FANCHIN (USA/18) lost to Anton PRILEPOV (BLR/47).
On the women’s side, Olympic team bronze medallist Kaori KAWANAKA (JPN) paid for yesterday’s mistake, when she forgot to fill in her scorecard at 30 metres. Seeded only No 80, the Japanese archer faced Guendalina SARTORI (ITA/33) in the 1/48 elimination round. After a tie at 4-4, SARTORI outscored her opponent in the fifth set (28-27) to win the match. Meanwhile, Dola BANERJEE (IND/81), who had the same scorecard issue as KAWANAKA yesterday, faced Olympian Miranda LEEK (USA/32) in a match that was even tighter. After a tie at 5-5, the archer from India won the shoot-off 10 to 6. In the 1/24 elimination round, BANERJEE went on to defeat SARTORI 7-3.
To everyone’s surprise, world No 3 Deepika KUMARI of India was stopped by teammate Rimil BURIULY (2-6) in the 1/24 elimination round, and Korea’s CHANG Hye Jin (No 11) was defeated by Mexico’s Gina GONZALEZ, No 54. The top Turkish archer, Begül LOKLUOGLU (No 17), was edged out by Iran’s Ameneh MARZOUGHI (No 65), 4-6. Christine BJERENDAL (SWE/44) led Lisa UNRUH (GER/21) 5-3; the German archer lost the match on the last set when she scored only 20 points.
Two close matches ended in shoot-offs: Olympian Viktoriya KOVAL (UKR/23) lost to Cyrielle COTRY (FRA/42) 8 to 9, while Tatiana SEGINA (RUS/24) defeated Sarah NIKITIN (BRA/41) 10 to 9. Ukrainian Olympian Lidiia SICHENIKOVA (No 14) and Italian legend Natalia VALEEVA (main photo) survived tough matches to advance to the 1/16 elimination round. The arrival of the eight highest seeded athletes from qualifications promises to make the next individual rounds very exciting as of tomorrow.
