New players emerge in first rounds of compound eliminations

There were no surprises in the men’s first round, with all the favourites advancing to the 1/24. Former world champion Dietmar TRILLUS (CAN) had a difficult time against Vladimir BRADA (CZE). The Canadian trailed before the last three arrows, but came back at 141-141 to force a shoot-off, which he won 10-9.
The second round featured several unexpected outcomes. TRILLUS lost to Iran’s Hamzeh NEKOEEI (No 12), while former World Cup Final winner Sergio PAGNI (ITA/13) suffered two 8s to lose his match against YANG Youngho (KOR/52). Mike SCHLOESSER (NED/9) had a close match against Turkish archer Evren CAGIRAN (No 57). The men were tied at 58-58, 87-87, 115-115. SCHLOESSER then outscored his opponent X10-10-9 to 9-9-9 on the last three arrows to win the match 144-142.
Dutch teammate Sander DOLDERMAN (No 25) scored three 8s in his dual against Daniel MOSER (AUT/40), who held gold for a victory, 144-139. Russia’s Danzan KHALUDUROV (No 23) missed an arrow among otherwise good scores, giving Patrizio HOFER (SUI/42) the victory, 142-137. Finally, World Cup Final bronze medallist Julio Ricardo FIERRO (MEX/24) was stopped in a shoot-off by Venezuelan's Eduardo GONZALEZ (photo), whose final 10 was closer to the centre of the target than his opponent’s.
As the compound women were less numerous than the men, the majority had a bye into the second round. Ogden World Cup winner (2010) Sandrine VANDIONANT (FRA/26) defeated 2010 European champion Viktoriya BALZHANOVA (RUS/39) after gaining a five-point advantage (30-25) in the first three arrows. Paralympic bronze medallist Stepanida ARTAKHINOVA (RUS/41) was stopped by Sophie DODEMONT (FRA/24).
In her battle against teammate Diane WATSON, American Carli COCHRAN trailed 27-30 after three arrows but came back as the match progressed, clinching the win at 141-138. Runner-up of the 2010 World Cup Final Ashley WALLACE (CAN/16) trailed Maja MARCEN (COL/49) from the start. The Colombian archer, who led by two points before the final arrow, concluded with a 7, allowing her opponent to tie at 138-138. WALLACE won the shoot-off 10-9.
World field champion Ivana BUDEN (CRO/30) suffered an early defeat against the surprising Iraqi competitor Fatimah ALMASHHADANI (main photo). “I am obviously very happy and even more so if this victory can bring joy to people in my country also”, commented the archer from Iraq. “I hope to continue on this path and achieve more beautiful victories.”
The next rounds of eliminations run all the way through the semi-finals. These matches, which will be shot this afternoon, promise to be even more exciting with the arrival of the top eight athletes from qualifications.
