Four countries will fight for two mixed team gold medals
Antalya
In the recurve division, the Korean pair made of LEE Seungyun and KI Bo Bae, seeded No 1, was looking to do better than CHANG Hye Jin and OH Jin Hyek, “only” third in Shanghai. Both seeded No 1 individually, LEE and KI defeated Belarus, before outscoring Russia by 8 points in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Americans Brady ELLISON and Khatuna LORIG, winners in Shanghai, unexpectedly faltered in the first round. They suffered a second end at 33 points against Venezuela and lost the match. However Venezuela was stopped by Mexico in the quarter-finals. Juan René SERRANO and Aida ROMAN (photo), fourth in Shanghai, shot the highest score of the day (152) to advance to the semi-finals, but they were stopped at that point by Korea.
On the other side of the draw, Great Britain (No 14) was a surprising semi-finalist. Naomi FOLKARD and Ashe MORGAN stopped No 3 Ukraine in the first round and Germany in the quarter-finals. However, China’s XUNG Yu and CUI Yuanyuan (No 2) were too strong for Great Britain in the semi-finals, which they won by a large margin. China will challenge Korea for the gold medal, while Mexico and Great Britain will meet for the bronze.
In the compound division, the United States, seeded No. 1, were expected to go far. Erika JONES, who won in Shanghai with Braden GELLENTHIEN, paired today with Rodger WILLETT Jr., leader of the men’s compound ranking. They defeated Venezuela, but scored lower than usual in quarter-finals against Italy’s Sergio PAGNI / Marcella TONIOLI (main photo). After initially trailing, Italy came back, took the lead after three ends before concluding with a perfect 40 for a major upset, 153-147. Italy went on to qualify for the gold medal final after an easy defeat over Iran.
The results were equally unpredictable on the other side of the draw. Canada’s Dietmar TRILLUS and Ashley WALLACE (No 15) upset Koreans MIN Lihong and YOUN So Jung (No 2) in the first round. In a tough quarter-final against Mexico, the Canadians trailed before the final four arrows but came back to win the match by just one point. In the semi-final they faced No 3 India. Rajat CHAUHAN and Manjudha SOY, who had qualified over Russia, left no chance to Canada. They posted 154 points to advance to the final against Italy, the bronze medallist from Shanghai. The bronze medal match will be between Canada and Iran.
