Colombia wins historic first World Cup gold medal
Antalya
The compound men’s final featured two of the hottest teams on the World Cup circuit: USA (No 1) and Denmark (No 2). Denmark, who had lost all recent encounters with USA, including the last two Antalya finals as well as the Turin World Championships final, badly wanted a first victory today. It looked to be an uphill battle against American archers Braden GELLENTHIEN, Reo WILDE and Rodger WILLETT Jr. who are in the top 5 of the world ranking. The Danish athletes Martin DAMSBO and Patrick LAURSEN, who will both shoot for individual medals this afternoon, joined by Stephan HANSEN, started the final with several arrows out of the 10 ring. They trailed the USA by three points after one end, and to come back would not be easy. However, Denmark (photo) recovered two points in the second end, before delivering six 10s in the third end – a perfect score. For the first time, they took the lead in the match, 172-169, before the last six arrows. USA had several low scores, while Denmark concluded the match with 10-10-10 for a victory 230-225 and a well-deserved gold medal. “It’s awesome, we shot pretty well and despite the difficult wind conditions we went through”, commented Stephan HANSEN.
For the bronze medal, France (No 3) met Shanghai runner-up Italy (No 11). The wind was a factor, causing several unusual 8s on both sides. Pierre-Julien DELOCHE, Christophe DOUSSOT and Dominique GENET led by three points after one end, but the Italians Mauro BOVINI, Stefano MAZZI and Sergio PAGNI came back slowly but surely. They recovered two points in the second end, and managed to tie before the last six arrows, before finally taking a small lead before the last three arrows. Shooting first, the French concluded with 10-10-10, putting pressure on their opponents. An 8 by Italy ended their chances for bronze. Victory 225-223 for France, and the first team medal for this country in a year.
The women’s finals were equally exciting. The gold medal match was a duel between the United States (No 2) and surprising Colombia (No 8), who upset Shanghai champions Korea (No 1) on their way to this final. Led by individual finalist Sara LOPEZ, Colombia (main photo) posted high scores throughout the week, showing the progress they have accomplished recently as the country prepares to host its first World Cup event. Their final obstacle on the way to the gold medal was the American team, runner-up in Shanghai. Both teams shot very well today, with Colombia building a one point lead in the first end, and adding two more points in the second end to lead 115-112 at the halfway mark. The USA tried to come back but Sara LOPEZ, Maja MARCEN and Alejandra USQUIANO matched them arrow by arrow to take the win 228-226, resulting in an historic first World Cup gold medal for Colombia.
“It is a very beautiful victory before the Medellin World Cup next month”, said Alejandra USQUIANO. “We worked very hard but we must go on even stronger. A big thank you to our coaches who are here with us and to those who stayed in Colombia!”
Finally, the women’s bronze medal match featured France (No 3) and Russia (No 4). The French compound archers Sophie DODEMONT, Pascale LEBECQUE and Sandrine VANDIONANT have been chasing a first World Cup team medal since 2011, while Russia's Viktoria BALZHANOVA, Svetlana CHERKASHNEVA and Albina LOGINOVA won the Ogden 2012 World Cup together. In windy conditions, France suffered two 7s by Pascale LEBECQUE in the first two ends, allowing Russia to take the lead. Both teams increased their level in the third end, but Russia kept a two point advantage before the last six arrows, and concluded with 59 points to win the match 224-216 and the bronze medal.
The competition continues this afternoon with the compound mixed team and individual finals.
