Mexico and Malaysia to shoot for first World Cup gold

In the recurve men’s category, top qualifier Mexico lived up to expectations. They ended the hopes of host country Colombia in the quarter-finals (223-216), and faced the United States in the next round. Olympic team silver medallists Brady ELLISON, Jake KAMINSKI and Jacob WUKIE had qualified with a top score of 229 points over China. However against Mexico their scores were lower. Juan René SERRANO, Luis Eduardo VELEZ and Luis ALVAREZ took the lead from the start and won 225-218.
On the other side of the bracket, two surprising teams advanced to the semi-finals: Canada and Malaysia. The young team comprised of Asian champion Khairul Anuar MOHAMAD, Atiq Bazil BAKRI and Haziq KAMARUDDIN had showed their great form with a score of 227 points earlier in the day. However, it was the Canadians Crispin DUENAS, Jay LYON and Hugh MACDONALD who took a small lead in the first end. They kept it until the final six arrows, but faltered in the last end with three 8s. Malaysia won the match by just one point (220-219), and will face Mexico for the gold. Both teams have already won team silver medals in the World Cup, but never the gold. In the bronze medal match, Canada has a shot at a first World Cup team medal against the United States.
On the women’s side, top-seeded China easily qualified over Cuba for the semi-finals against Mexico, who had defeated Colombia in the previous round. There were three Olympic silver medallists from London in this semi-final: Mexico’s Aida ROMAN (individual) and China’s XU Jing and CHENG Ming (team. Moreover, China had an ace in Antalya winner CUI Yuanyuan. The match was more or less decided in the first end, however, when a 4 destroyed Mexico’s hopes of reaching the final; China won, 220-209.
Meanwhile, second-seeded India qualified easily for the semi-finals over Venezuela, and so did the United States against Brazil. Deepika KUMARI, Bombayla Devi LAISHRAM, Rimil BURIULY (photo) suffered a bad first end at 51 points, allowing Michelle GILBERT, Miranda LEEK and Khatuna LORIG to build a four-point lead. However, India came back fighting, and won the match 216-211. China and India will shoot for gold, while Mexico and the United States will face off for bronze.
In the compound division, the United States men’s team, first in Shanghai and second in Antalya, posted 236 points in the quarter-finals to qualify over Puerto Rico. Their opponent in the semi-finals was Colombia, who had upset Mexico in the previous round. Juan Carlos CARRASQUILLA, Camilo Andrés CARDONA and José Carlos OSPINA shot well in the semi-finals, but World N°1 Braden GELLENTHIEN, N°2 Reo WILDE and former World Cup Final winner Rodger WILLETT Jr. were too strong, putting up a 236 for the win.
On the other side of the bracket, India posted a score of 236 as well in quarter-finals. But the semi-final against France was tougher. Pierre-Julien DELOCHE, Christophe DOUSSOT and Dominique GENET (main photo) had a one-point deficit after one end, but a perfect second end of 60 gave them a boost. France went on to win the match, 234-231. Rajat CHAUHAN, Sandeep KUMAR and Ratan Singh KHURAIJAM will shoot against Colombia for the bronze medal. In the final against France, the Americans will try to recover the World Cup crown they lost to Denmark in Antalya. For the French team, who are the reigning European champions, it is their first shot at a World Cup gold medal since 2008.
Finally, the Colombian compound women’s team was expected to shine after their gold medal in Antalya. New world record holder Sara LOPEZ, individual finalist Alejandra USQUIANO and Maja MARCEN were the top qualifiers in this week’s event. They shot the highest score of the quarter-finals with 231 points, but had a tough match in the semis against Venezuela. After a shaky start, Colombia took a small lead in the second end, but their opponents came back on the final six arrows. Shoot-off! It was 10-10-9 for Colombia against 10-9-8 for Venezuela, giving the home team the win.
Meanwhile, The US women, silver medallists in Antalya, outscored India in the quarter-finals and faced second-seeded France in the semis. Sophie DODEMONT, Pascale LEBECQUE, Sandrine VANDIONANT took a two-point lead from the start, but an 8 in the second end gave ground to the Americans. Carli COCHRAN, Erika JONES and Brittany LORENTI increased their level to win the match 229-226. As in Antalya, they will face Colombia in the final. Can LOPEZ, MERCEN and USQUIANO reclaim the gold medal with the support of the home crowd?
