France wins compound men’s gold in victory over USA

The compound men from the United States, first in Shanghai but only second to Denmark in Antalya, were looking to recover the World Cup gold medal today. The task was not going to be easy for their French opponents; the European champions had yet to defeat the United States in six World Cup or World Championships encounters since 2006.
Braden GELLENTHIEN, Reo WILDE and former World Cup Final winner Rodger WILLETT Jr. had a four-point lead at the half, and seemed on track for victory. And then the unthinkable happened: a strong gust of wind caused Reo WILDE to score a miss. Pierre-Julien DELOCHE, Christophe DOUSSOT and Dominique GENET (main photo) found themselves in the lead (165-158), and with the pressure off, went on to win the match 223-216, resulting in the first team gold medal since 2008 for France. “Maybe the wind was in our favour, even though there was too much wind for a final,” said DELOCHE. “In the end we had the French national anthem La Marseillaise and we are very happy.”
In the men’s bronze medal match, Colombia had a shot at its first World Cup medal in this category. However, India was stronger out of the gate. In difficult windy conditions, Juan Carlos CARRASQUILLA, Camilo Andrés CARDONA and José Carlos OSPINA managed a comeback in the second end, but it was short-lived. India recovered the lead immediately and won the match 215-210, giving the bronze medal to Rajat CHAUHAN, Sandeep KUMAR and Ratan Singh KHURAIJAM.
The women’s final was a rematch of the Antalya showdown: Colombia versus the United States. Colombia was expected to shine on home soil after winning a historic first gold medal in Turkey. Despite the support of the crowd, Maja MARCEN, new world record holder Sara LOPEZ, and individual finalist Alejandra USQUIANO had difficulty finding the 10 (only one in the whole match). They were never a threat for Carli COCHRAN, Brittany LORENTI and Erika JONES (photo). In winning the match 214-206, the US women have recovered the World Cup team gold that had eluded them since Antalya 2012.
Venezuela took the lead from the start against France in the bronze medal match. The encounter seemed to turn upside down in the third end, however, when scores increased on the French side and Venezuela suffered from some difficult shots. However, a final miss by France destroyed their chances of a comeback. It was a 214-208 victory for Venezuela, who won bronze again after their bronze win at Ogden 2012. For France, it was the second fourth-place finish in a row after Antalya.
Competition continues this afternoon with the individual compound finals.
