Familiar faces advance in recurve eliminations
Wroclaw
The afternoon started with the first two rounds of individual recurve eliminations, featuring everyone but the top 8 from qualifications, who had byes into the 1/16th.
The highest seeded victim of the men’s first round was Sjef VAN DEN BERG (NED). India’s Atanu DAS defeated his most decorated teammate Jayanta TALUKDAR in straight sets in the first round, and faced 2008 Ukrainian Olympic champion Viktor RUBAN (main photo) in his next match. The archer from India led 4-2, but RUBAN came back with 29 and 28 points to win the match 6-4.
Some of the favourites suffered or faltered in the 1/24 round. Juan-René SERRANO (MEX) trailed teammate Ivan GONZALEZ 1-3 and 2-4, before coming back to 4-4 and winning the match 6-4. Medellin silver medallist Jeff HENCKELS (LUX) trailed Cevdet DEMIRAL (TUR) 3-5 but forced a shoot-off, which he won 9-7. Medellin semi-finalist Jean-Charles VALLADONT (FRA) was defeated in three sets by Rick VAN DEN OEVER (NED) today. Polish archers still on track are Slawomir NAPLOSZEK and Maciej FALDZINSKI, who upset British Olympian Larry GODFREY in the 1/24 round.
The women’s first two elimination rounds did not produce any major surprises. Mexican Olympic bronze medallist Mariana AVITIA (photo), absent at the last two World Cup stages, returned successfully with victories over Armenia’s Nune VASILYAN and Ukrainian Olympian Lidiia SICHENIKOVA to advance to the 1/16 round. Fellow Mexican Alejandra VALENCIA also qualified, as did World Games champion Naomi FOLKARD (GBR). The favourite who had the most difficulty today was world N°2 Deepika KUMARI (IND), who needed five sets and a shoot-off (7-6) to defeat Michelle GILBERT (USA).
Three archers from the host country had qualified from the first round: Natalia LESNIAK, Karina LIPIARSKA and Wioleta MYSZOR; however, only LIPIARSKA succeeded in the second match and will compete in the next round tomorrow.
