Korean mixed team wins trip to World Cup Final in Paris

In the recurve event, Korea was strong with scores of 153 points in the first two rounds. The team of OH Jin Hyek and YUN Ok Hee, both seeded No. 1 individually, easily defeated the Netherlands in the 1/8 elimination round, before edging out Americans Miranda LEEK and Brady ELLISON by just 1 point in the quarter-finals.

Chinese Taipei, the highest scoring pair of the 1/8 round with 154 points, scored a victory over Ukraine in the quarter-finals and advanced to the semi-finals against Korea. It was a one-sided match from the start: Korea took a three-point lead on the first end, and kept increasing the gap for an easy victory, 149-142. This semi-final victory qualifies Korea for the World Cup Final, where they will shoot against a team from host country France.
On the other side of the bracket, Italian Olympic medallists Natalia VALEEVA and Mauro NESPOLI outscored India in the first round (149-145), and went on to defeat frequent mixed team medallists Aida ROMAN and Juan-René SERRANO of Mexico in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, they met Japan, who’d had comfortable wins over Russia and Germany. Italy won the match by a single point, and will challenge Korea in the gold medal match. Japan and Chinese Taipei will meet for the bronze.
Italy - number one ranked and already qualified for the World Cup Finals, thanks to the efforts of Marcella TONIOLI and Sergio PAGNI - was represented today instead by Anastasia ANASTASIO and Federico PAGNONI, suffered in the 1/8 round, defeating Indonesia only in a shoot-off and by millimetres, and were then stopped in the quarter-finals by Mexico, who outscored them by the smallest margin (153-152). In the semi-finals Mexico faced Russia, who had had difficult matches today: a first round against India that ended in a tie at 156-156, and a shoot-off victory 20-18, followed by a one-point victory over Korea at 155-154.
In the semi-finals, Mexico’s Martha HERNANDEZ and Gerardo ALVARADO had a three-point lead before the last end. However Albina LOGINOVA and Alexander DAMBAEV managed a comeback with 40-37, and both teams ended up at 153 points. Russia was just a little more consistent in the shoot-off, with 10-10 against 10-9, to advance to the final.
The United States dominated the other side of the compound bracket. Braden GELLENTHIEN and Erika JONES were the highest scoring team of the morning with 158 points in all three of their matches, against Sweden, South Africa and the Netherlands, who had defeated Medellin bronze medallists Sara PRIEELS and Michael CAUWE of Belgium in the previous round. The Americans will face Russia in the gold medal match, while Mexico and the Netherlands will face off for bronze.
