Magali FOULON and Alexander LIAHUSHEV star in biggest upsets of the morning
Belek
Women
Featuring archers ranked 9-104 from qualifications, the first round of women’s eliminations had its share of surprises. Natalia VALEEVA (ITA), 2007 world champion, suffered defeat at the hands of Venezuela’s Mayra MENDEZ, 4-6. Colombia’s Natalia SANCHEZ, first-ever world bronze medallist from South America in 2009, lost a shoot-off to Polish archer Wioleta MYSZOR (8-10). And the journey ended for Viktoriya KOVAL, winner of the Antalya World Cup in 2010 and Chairman of the World Archery Athletes’ Committee.
In the second round (1/24), this year’s World Cup Final bronze medallist CUI Yuanyuan (CHN) lost a close match to Spain’s Magali FOULON (main photo), following CUI’s disappointing qualification: 37th. Chinese hopes now lie with two Olympic team silver medallists, XU Jing and CHENG Ming, the latter qualifying over Medellin World Cup runner-up Miranda LEEK (USA).
Defending world silver medallist Kristine ESEBUA (GEO) was defeated in five sets by Sarah NIKITIN (BRA). Olympic team bronze medallist Kaori KAWANAKA (JPN) suffered the same feat against Rebecca MARTIN (GBR). Wins claimed by her two teammates - Naomi FOLKARD and Amy OLIVER - mean a full house of British women move into the last 32.
The same is true of Mexico, whose Olympic bronze medallist Mariana AVITIA and World Cup Finalist Alejandra VALENCIA qualified easily. Olympic silver medallist Aída ROMAN has a top-8 bye into the 1/16 round.
Korea and Germany bring the number of countries who still have three archers in the tournament to four. Today, Lisa UNRUH, Elena RICHTER and Karina WINTER found the form that saw them ranked second in team qualifications - and RICHTER and WINTER shoot personal bests. They each breezed through their two matches.
Other favourites who qualified for tomorrow’s 1/16 round include five-time Olympian Khatuna LORIG (USA), former World Cup Final winner Dola BANERJEE (IND), recent World Cup Final silver medallist Deepika KUMARI (IND) and 2010 European champion Natalia ERDYNIEVA (RUS).
Men
The most interesting 1/48 match featured Michele FRANGILLI (ITA) and World Cup Finalist ZHANG Jianping (CHN). Struggling with a neck injury, Olympic team champion FRANGILLI managed to recover from a 4-0 deficit, drawing the match at 5-5. It was for nothing, though: he lost the shoot-off.
The 1/48 round was also the end of the line for two World Cup medallists from this season: Shungo TABATA (JPN) - who had bronze in Shanghai - and Medellin runner-up Jeff HENCKELS (LUX).
European champion Rick VAN DER VEN (NED) defeated the only African archer who had survived the cut, René KOUASSI (CIV), before winning his 1/24 round match 6-0 over Slawomir NAPLOSZEK (POL).
The upset of the day was brewing just a few targets down the line. After losing the shoot-off for a top 8 bye at the conclusion of qualification yesterday, Brady ELLISON - who recovered from a broken hand at the start of this season to take World Cup Final bronze - lost in straight sets to Belorussian Alexander LIAHUSHEV (photo). ELLISON’s teammates, Joe FANCHIN and Jake KAMINSKI, won both their matches.
Ukrainians Markiyan IVASHKO and Viktor RUBAN - the 2008 Olympic champion - survived two close matches to make it through to the last 32. Meanwhile, Alexey NIKOLAEV’s defeat ended Russia hopes.
Against Keith HANLON (IRL) - competing in his 11th consecutive World Championships - Sjef VAN DEN BERG (NED) trailed 0-4 before taking victory 6-4. Will HANLON come back for a twelfth try in 2015?
India were successful, and join Korea as the only countries with three men remaining in the competition: Tarundeep RAI, after a tie at 4-4, defeated ZHANG Jianping 6-4. Jayanta TALUKDAR (IND) did exactly the same, winning his fifth set against European bronze medallist Thomas FAUCHERON (FRA). KAPIL won a shoot-off against Daniel PACHECO (COL).
Contenders who survived the first two rounds included Olympic silver medallist Takaharu FURUKAWA (JPN), Asian champion Khairul Anuar MOHAMAD (MAS), Luis ALVAREZ and Juan René SERRANO (MEX) - and Crispin DUENAS (CAN).
Evidence of archery’s development in Brazil continued with the qualification of 15-year-old Marcus CARVALHO. Mongolia and Thailand will be represented in the next round by Jantsan GANTUGS and Khomkrit DUANGSUWAN, respectively. And host country Turkey still has one male recurve representative in the tournament: Fatih BOZLAR.
The day continues with initial eliminations in the compound competition. Further recurve eliminations, up to the semi-finals, take place on Thursday.
