A new face to watch: top compound cadet Alexandra SAVENKOVA
Recurve Cadet
Qualification for recurve archers was a round of 144 arrows. Recurve cadet men shot 36 arrows at each of 70, 60m, 50m and 30m; recurve cadet women 60m, 50m, 40m and 30m.
The recurve men’s category was open until the final end. China’s XU Zhiwei (photo), competing in his first event at 16 years old, tallied 1308 points to finish first. The same score earned Moldovan archer Dan OLARU second place (XU put more arrows in the centre, X-ring on the target - pushing him into the higher spot). OLARU turns 17 in November, and is already an Olympian and European senior bronze medallist.
Carlo SCHMITZ (GER), competing in his second World Youth Championships aged 17, came 3rd with 1299 points. Leader at the halfway mark, Patrick HUSTON (GBR) dropped to 4th with 1296. Chinese Taipei athlete CHEN Wei-Chieh followed in 5th - ahead of Arsalan BALDANOV (RUS) and Thomas KOENIG (FRA), who both scored 1290. Mexican Luis Esteban INFANTE caught the 8th spot.
Chinese Taipei was the best team overall with 3844, just three points ahead of France. Host country China had 3806, outscoring Korea by three points. It was a disappointing showing from Korea, a country that performed brilliantly in junior qualifications.
In the recurve cadet women’s qualification, Asian domination echoed what we saw in the junior competition (and senior ranks in 2013). Korea placed three archers in the top 5: JEONG Yuri, born in 1998, finished 1st with 1351 points, outscoring teammate LEE Sodam by just one point. They were well ahead of the rest of the field.
Chinese archer WU Jiaxin, the 16-year-old who competed at the Shanghai World Cup this year, shot 1335 points to finish 3rd ahead of teammate ZHANG Lu. LEE Hyeseon, the third Korean and who turns 14 on Friday, took 5th. The first archer from Europe came next, Adriana MARTIN (ESP), aged 17 and at her third World Championships after Legnica 2011 and the senior event in Belek last week. The last two spots in the top 8 went to LI Jiaman (CHN), who won three medals this year at the second European Grand Prix, and Laura RUGGIERI (FRA). Tuyana DASHIDORZHIEVA (RUS), team bronze medallist in 2011, finished 11th.
With all three archers in the top 5, the Korean team led the rankings: 4024 placed them almost 50 points over China. France came in 3rd with 3917 points, ahead of Russia and the United States.
China’s 2643 topped the mixed team qualifications, ahead of Korea on 2638 and 2598 from France.
Compound Cadet
Domagoj BUDEN (CRO), brother of new world silver medallist Ivana, was top compound scorer over the 72-arrow qualification at 50 metres. With 690 points, the 16-year-old showed that he is the man to beat this week. Mexico’s 14-year-old Cecilio QUEVEDO was impressive in his first international event. He scored 688 points to finish a close 2nd (and lead his team to 1st place), ahead of Anton BULAEV of Russia on 686.
Chris BEE was top scorer for the United States in 4th. Isak CARLSSON (SWE), Renaud DOMANSKI (BEL) - runner-up two years ago and world junior field champion - and Mario VAVRO (CRO) all scored 680 points to take spots 5 to 7. Samet Can YAKALI (TUR) won the 8th spot.
Mexico and Turkey were two nice surprises in the team ranking. Close throughout, the Latin American archers finished with 2023, two points ahead of their European opponents. The United States’ score of 2008 placed them in third, three points ahead of Russia - and Canada completed the top 5.
Three points gave Croatia - BUDEN and ORLIC - the top ranking in the compound mixed team event, ahead of Russia. Mexico’s pair finished a distant 3rd.
Two young compound cadet women shot scores far ahead of the rest of the field. Croatia’s new star Maja ORLIC, 16 years old and fourth at the recent senior World Archery Championships, led from the very first end - but she was challenged throughout by Alexandra SAVENKOVA (main photo). The 17-year-old Russian archer, competing in her first international event, stole the top spot in the last 12 arrows. SAVENKOVA had 679 points for a one point victory over ORLIC’s 678.
Next closest was Sonia TANIGUCHI (USA), who turns 17 next month, 16 points behind with 661. Fourth, on 658, came 14-year-old Lisell JAATMA from Estonia - whose mother Maarika and sister Mariel competed together at the 2011 World Championships. Just three points separated JAATMA and 7th place: Danielle REYNOLDS (USA) had 657 for 5th, Kirsten GEORGE (GBR) 656 for 6th and 655 was enough for Mexico’s Fernanda DEL ROCIO to claim 7th.
Fatimah ALMASHHADANI, 15 years old and the sister of Iraqi Olympian Rand ALMASHHADANI - who is competing at Wuxi in the recurve junior women’s category - took the 8th and last spot for a bye into the 1/16 round. Returning triple-gold medallist Emily FISCHER, who was 14 when she won this category in Legnica, came 10th and missed out on a bye.
Mirroring the junior competition yesterday, the United States cadet team were on top throughout the qualification session - and finished with a 5-point advantage over Russia, 1969 to 1964. Great Britain came 3rd with 1916 points, ahead of Mexico and Australia.
Three points gave Croatia the top ranking in the compound mixed team event, ahead of Russia. Mexico’s pair finished a distant 3rd.
Competition continues tomorrow with the individual and mixed team eliminations.
