Competitors sieved, top 32s decided in Wuxi

Juniors
Croatia’s Vedran ORLIC, brother of newly-famous Maja, who has multiple-event World Cup experience at 19, won his first round over Mexico’s José Miguel CRUZ in a shoot-off (10-8). Bolot TSYBZHITOV (RUS) - bronze medallist at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games - then stopped him in his tracks, winning 7 set points to 1.

Klemen STRAJHAR (SLO), European silver medallist and Olympian in 2012, led Adiyasuren BAASANKHUU (MGL) 4-2 in the first round. Before losing the fourth and fifth sets, and the match, 4-6. Victory did not side with the Mongolian archer for long, he lost his second round match in straight sets to Oldair ZAMORA (MEX).

Twins Daniel and Sean MCLAUGHLIN (USA), turning 20 this November, won all their matches. However Brit Ashe MORGAN - who made his senior team debut this season - and Italian junior world indoor champion Luca MARAN are both out.

Recurve women experienced at the senior level failed to qualify for the last 32, too. Alejandra VALENCIA (MEX) - who, at 18, has already been to three World Cup Finals, besides her 2011 cadet bronze - disappointed in qualification, and struggled in the 1/24 eliminations round. She trailed by two-points heading into the final set against KANG Un Ju (PRK), managed to level the match at 5-5 - and then lost the one-arrow shoot-off with an 8. KANG had a 10 (main photo).

Anne Marie LAURSEN - senior world team bronze medallist with Denmark in Belek - heads home without individual honours in Wuxi, and Iraqi Olympian AL-MASHHADANI lost a shoot-off to Monika JURZAK (POL).

Favourites who did make the cut include: ZHU Jiani (CHN), Noémie BRIANNE (FRA), Ukrainian Olympian Lidiia SICHENIKOVA and Kristina TIMOFEEVA (RUS).

Due to the lower number of participants fewer compound matches took place. Jean DUHEM (FRA) took top-score honours on behalf of the men, with 145; Iran’s Vahid GHONCHI’s 144 was second best. The women’s top score contest was a tie, and in the same match! 137 for both Courtney COWLING (AUS) and Carlotta FEBO (ITA) forced a shoot-off, which the Italian athlete won. Team gold medallist at the 2012 World Junior Field Championships, Daisy Clark (GBR), is heading home from the individual competition empty handed.

Cadets
While the top 8 qualifiers with a bye in each category watched from the side-lines, lower-seeded cadets took to the stage - and impressed. Recurve man Marcus Vinicius DALMEIDA (photo), in particular: under pressure in the fifth and final set of his match against Korea’s YOON Harim, he shot a 29 to beat YOON’s 28 - and win. The 15-year-old Brazilian archer - who made the 1/16 round at the senior worlds in Belek - is a 2016 hopeful, when the Olympic Games arrive in his hometown of Rio de Janeiro. With YOON out, two Koreans are left to fight for the recurve cadet men’s title: KIM Dongil and IM Ungyu.

Bryony PITMAN (GBR) and Regina María ROMERO (GUA) were the only two cadet recurve women to shoot a perfect set (30) in the first round, and both won those matches. PITMAN lost a one-arrow shoot-off to Alicia MARIN (ESP) in the second round, 9-10 - but 58th-seed ROMERO beat Viktoria OLEKSIYK (UKR), ranked 10th, easily. Returning team bronze medallist from 2011, Tuyana DASHIDORZHIEVA (RUS) qualified for the 1/16 round in straight sets.

Newcomer Vili KOROSEC (SLO) was top scorer in the compound matches today. His 146 points beat all junior compound scores as well! Baris TANDOGAN (TUR) score of 145 deserves a special mention, too. Top women’s honours belonged to Viktoriya POLONSKAYA of Kazakhstan, who scored 135.
