JEONG Yuri and Patrick HUSTON, new cadet recurve champions
Spectators, competitors and staff at the field observed a minute’s silence in memory of Mr SHIN Hyeon Jong, the successful recurve and compound coach who passed away on Friday. Coach SHIN will be greatly missed, but his memory will live on in the successes of the athletes he coached.
Without fail, the Korean cadets were successful this afternoon - as they won all the mixed team and individual matches they appeared in. In the women’s individual final, top qualifier JEONG Yuri (photo) - competing in her first international event aged 15 - defeated third-ranked WU Jiaxin of host country China for a well-deserved gold medal. Asia dominated the podium: 14-year-old newcomer LEE Hyeseon (also Korea) won the bronze medal over surprise-Guatemalan Regina Maria ROMERO - the n°58 seed and the only Central American left in this stage of the competition.
The most successful man of the session was Patrick HUSTON (main photo), who claimed individual and mixed team titles. N°4 after qualifications - but top scorer over the longer distances - 17-year-old HUSTON steamrolled through all his elimination matches, and the gold medal match against n°10 Sanzhar MUSSAYEV was no different. He won the first two sets, and after losing the third, shot 10-10-10 to finish the match in style: 6-2. The Kazakhstani archer, also 17 years old, scored a first podium for his country.
Russia’s Arsalan BALDANOV (n°6) and Mexico’s Luis Esteban INFANTE (n°3) fought hard for the bronze medal. Initially starting the match with three 10s, the Russian could not keep going at that level and, after a tie at 4-4, the Mexican archer won the final set (27-25) - and the medal.
In the mixed team final between outsiders Great Britain and France, Brits Patrick HUSTON and Rebecca MARTIN (photo) overcame an initial 6 to build a seven-point lead over the first half of the match. Two points was all that new team gold medallists Laura RUGGIERI and Thomas KOENIG could recover - and Great Britain won the gold, 145-140.
The top two teams from qualifications, defending champion Korea and China, faced off in a tight bronze medal match. There was never more than one point separating the two pairs. After all sixteen arrows, Koreans KIM Dongil and JEONG Yuri emerged as winners, 147-146.
Stay tuned for the junior mixed team and individual finals at the World Youth Championships, this afternoon in Wuxi.
