Vegas day 3: SCHLOESSER strongest for longest

A Facebook post from Mike SCHLOESSER after finishing his third perfect round of the tournament read simply: “Yes! I finally did it. I shot the 900 at Vegas.” As one of only 13 out of the 206-strong division to achieve the feat in 2014, the Dutch archer has a list of achievements that most would be jealous of at the young age of 20.

Just making the final line wasn’t enough. SCHLOESSER shot 15 arrows into the 10 to set up a two-man shoot-off against the French archer who had knocked him out – and then gone onto win – the Indoor World Cup Final, just the day before.

The pair both recorded perfect 30s with their first three arrows head-to-head. Then, in the seventh end of the shoot-off, Sebastien PEINEAU put two arrows into the 9. SCHLOESSER only let one leak out of the 10 – and the Dutch world champion had won.

In recent years, there have been European archers in the last three. Peter ELZINGA (NED) was second in 2013, Denmark’s Martin DAMSBO was there in 2011 – and in 2009 Morgan LUNDIN (SWE) was one spot away from making history. While they were close, SCHLOESSER managed what they could not – and brought Europe its first compound men’s title from Vegas.

Sarah LANCE (USA) was the only compound woman to shoot a perfect 900, which won her the compound women’s title. Indoor World Cup runner up Crystal GAUVIN (USA) came second, and Colombian superstar Sara LOPEZ beat World Cup Final winner Erika JONES – also USA – in a third place shoot-off.

Brady ELLISON (USA) and KIM Yu Mi (KOR) won the recurve men’s and women’s championship categories respectively, both with 886 out of the possible 900. KIM shot 297 on the last day to dash any hope Olympic silver medallist Aida ROMAN (MEX) had of overtaking the Korean, while ELLISON leapt ahead of World Cup Champion Rick VAN DER VEN (NED) and veteran Italian Michele FRANGILLI off the back of his day-three 296.

The Indoor Archery World Cup concluded in Las Vegas, but the World Archery Indoor Championships is just around the corner. Athletes head to Nimes, France from 25 February to 2 March 2014 for the last event on the indoor season calendar.
