Wind no obstacle for top compounds at Bangkok
Sandeep KUMAR wasn’t far behind compound teammate Abhiska VERMA, either, as he sat on the 700 mark after the 72-arrow, 50-metre ranking round. Esmaeil EBADI was close, but the third-seeded archer from Iran missed it by a point.
In the female competition, top score went to Mino ABEDI, also Iran. Her 692 was three points higher than Jyothi Surekha VENNAM (IND) and four up on Ning-Meng WEN (TPE).
India's Laximirani MAJHI claimed the top women’s recurve seed with 652 – while the men’s was a two-way Japanese tie between Hideki KIKUCHI and Takaharu FURUKAWA on 661.
Fifth in the women’s recurve rankings was Deepika KUMARI, the Commonwealth gold medallist one of four Indian women in the top seven.
While the Koreans aren’t shooting in Bangkok due to national selections starting next week, no doubt they’ve got one eye on the results. Be warned, Korea: Iran, India and Chinese Taipei will be serious contenders at Incheon – the Asian Games – later this year.
Bangladesh might be a nation to watch, too. Qualifying in fifth, its recurve men’s team was better than China and Malaysia. The highly-touted Indian guys didn’t quite live up to their hype, though: third and 36 points off the pace. They’re still in position to take a run at the medals.
