“I told myself: you’re in a World Cup stage final, it’s forbidden not to shoot well,” said PEINEAU. “So I gave 200% to each arrow.”
Indoor Archery World Cup Champion Sebastien PEINEAU was nervous as, by his own admission, he’s not as comfortable shooting outdoors. He was comfortable enough to beat world number one and French teammate Pierre-Julien DELOCHE to Shanghai gold, though.
PEINEAU shot three nines early in the match and trailed three ends in. Six perfect arrows to finish gave him a shot – and one that looked better as DELOCHE leaked a few arrows into the nine.
DELOCHE needed a final 10 to force a shoot-off, although neither athlete knew it at that point. (There were too many linecutters for the target judges to assess.) He shot a nine. PEINEAU took gold.
First-time World Cup competitor Bridger DEATON was thrilled with bronze: “I’m hoping to win the next World Cup stage!”
It made for a full set of medals for DEATON – gold, silver and bronze – in his first final shooting as a senior. “It’s a lot more fun,” the newly full-time professional athlete said.
