Korea’s archery rebel: just who is OH Jin Hyek?

The name OH Jin Hyek is well-known in archery circles. Maverick of the Korean team, he’d never won an international tournament – though he’d picked up plenty of medals – until the gold he got at London 2012.

Since then, it’s been trophy after trophy, including the World Cup Champion title at Paris 2013. The world championships gold eludes him though, for the second time in a row last year he was relegated to second – by another Korean, for the second time. In 2011, it was KIM Woojin, who was the only recurve man to beat him in qualification at Medellin 2014. In 2013, at Belek, it was LEE Seungyun, an 18-year-old rookie on the team.

It’s the only medal missing from his collection – but if the respect he’s earned from his peers anything to go by, it won’t be long before he gets that one, too.

“I don’t think he has a weakness,” says Crispin DUENAS, Canadian bronze medallist in Belek last year. “He shoots at an extremely-high level, every time. I haven’t beaten him yet, but when I do I’ll tell you.”

His best ability: “to shoot lots of 10s,” according to the USA’s Brady ELLISON.

One thing everyone agrees on, though, is that OH is a little bit of a rebel. “His style is not very nice, not very Korean,” says Jean-Charles VALLADONT from France. “He moves a lot. But the finish is very good!”

It’s a special technique. But it works for him.
