Brazil qualify five out of six as Toronto 2015 Pan-Am Games quota spots decided
The Rosario 2014 Pan-American Archery Championships are also the primary qualifier for the Toronto 2015 Pan-Am Games – which includes recurve men’s and women’s team and individual events.
Ten individual spots were available at these Pan-Am champs. And, unlike with the Olympic qualifying procedure where the number of teams is set and nations can either qualifier one or three individuals as part of a team, Pan-Am Games allow two and three individuals places to be taken by a single nation.
If a squad doesn’t qualify in the team competition but does win three individual quota places, the nation is then invited to compete in the Games team event as well. The main team qualification was done earlier this week.
Jose IRIZARRY (PUR), Olmo PARRILLA (GUA), Daniel Xavier REZENDE (BRA), Jose ALVAREZ (MEX), Elias MALAVE (VEN), Thomas Alexander FLOSSBACH (GUA), Daniel MARTINEZ (DOM) and Oscar TICAS (ESA) were the last eight remaining men in the tournament and won Toronto quota spots for their nations.
The remaining two available men’s spots came down to matches between Marcus DALMEIDA (BRA) and Baltazar MERINO (ESA), and Andres ALFONSECA (DOM and Bernardo OLIVERIA (BRA).
Despite a long and intense summer travelling, DALMEIDA admitted to suffering from tiredness. He managed to beat MERINO for Brazil’s second spot – but OLIVEIRA couldn’t secure the third.
If OLIVIEIRA had won, Brazil would have also qualified a men’s team. They have an opportunity to qualify that last member and complete the quota trio at the final qualification tournament in the Dominican Republic in March 2015.
The Brazilian women won’t need that opportunity. Ana Marcella DOS SANTOS, Larissa DA COSTA RODRIGUES and Ana MACHADO made it into the last eight – securing the full three individual places for Brazil, and a team spot.
Joining them: Fernanda FAISAL (ARG), Tania MALDONADO (CHI), Ximena MENDIBERRY (ARG) and Keiko CHANG (CHI).
Chile, now with two women’s Toronto spots, beat the Mexican girls without conceding a set point earlier in the week.
Gloriana BERMUDEZ (CRC) beat Maria PAIZ (GUA) in straight sets while Rosa GUZMAN (DOM) took five to overcome Yesenia VALENCIA (GUA) in the knockouts for the final two places.
Compound eliminations for the Pan-Am Championship titles took place prior to the quota tournament.
Colombia’s Daniel MUNOZ will face Leandro ROJAS for men’s gold on Saturday, while Linda OCHOA (MEX) has another Colombian – Paris 2013 Archery World Cup Champion Alejandra USQUIANO in the women’s gold medal match.
So far in Rosario, Colombia has won every gold medal.
