Campos Marzano stuns tournament favourite Lavrinc at Santiago 2026
The first of six gold medal matches on Sunday at the Santiago 2026 Hyundai World Archery Para Series delivered one of the day’s biggest stories, as Daniela Cecilia Campos Marzano defeated tournament favourite Ziva Lavrinc 7-1 to win para recurve women’s gold.
The Peruvian tied the opening set 27-27 with the Slovenian before taking control, winning the next three sets 29-26, 26-23 and 26-24 at the Peñalolén Training Centre.
Campos Marzano was one of only two archers from Peru competing in Santiago, alongside para compound men’s entry Junior Alexander Vargas Landeo. Her victory made her the first Peruvian to win a medal on the inaugural World Para Series circuit.
“I’m not going to lie to you, I was nervous,” said Campos Marzano, who added a second gold medal to her 2026 season after winning at the Para South American Games. “It’s my first final in a Hyundai [World Para Series], at an event like this, and although I’d finished in the top 10 before, this was my first final. So, if I lost, I’d take silver; if I won, gold, so I tried to keep my nerves in check.”
“This is our first – our very first – medal at a Hyundai event, so I’m absolutely proud,” she added.
Campos Marzano is no stranger to major success, having won at the Para Pan American Games three years ago, also in Santiago, as well as bronze medals at the 2024 Pan American Para Championships and the Chicago Americas Para Cup in 2025.
However, Thursday’s qualification round had suggested a different outcome. The 27-year-old finished sixth among seven archers with 522 points, 56 behind top seed Lavrinc, who scored 578.
When it mattered most, the roles were reversed. Campos Marzano shot more consistently in the final, while Lavrinc struggled to maintain her qualification form, including two sevens in the third set and a five in the fourth. The Slovenian finished runner-up for the second time in 2026, having also lost the gold medal match at the European Para Championships in Rome.
In the W1 men’s final, USA’s Jason Tabansky defeated top seed David Drahoninsky of Czechia 6-2, with an eye on next year’s Para Pan American Games in Lima.
“We’re off to Lima to discover a place I’ve never been to before, to keep thriving in what we’re doing and to keep moving forward,” said Tabansky. He added that he wanted the Santiago tournament to help propel him and Team USA towards an even stronger performance in Lima.
“That’s why we’re going all out for those places at next year’s Games.”
The inaugural Hyundai World Archery Para Series season concludes in Dubai from 5-10 December.
