World Archery Youth Championships – Quotes of the Team Finals
Ogden (USA)
Recurve Junior Men
Thomas BARBER (GBR) – Silver medal “It was a surprise to be in the final. I was a little nervous shooting against Korea. My teammates did very well, but I feel my performance was not so good.” Recurve Junior Women LEE Yujin (KOR) – Gold medal “I am really happy because I have had a hard time in practice in the last two months. Now that I have this medal, I can forget about these bad times. It’s my first gold medal in a World Championships. I’m going to display it at my house with my other medals and trophies. During bad times, I look at them and it lifts my spirits.” Compound Junior Men Cody THOMPSON (USA) – Gold medal “It’s awesome. I’m glad to see that all my dedication and sacrifices are paying off. We were expecting to break the world record but it was windy. Anyway, a gold medal is a gold medal, no matter how you win it. All of us are very happy. As for now, I will relax and take it easy before my individual final tomorrow. I will celebrate tomorrow.” Angel RAMIREZ (MEX) – Silver medal “We usually shoot better than what you saw in the final today. Things didn’t go well, we didn’t have enough 10s. We will continue to practice.” Claud FRANTZEN (DEN) – Bronze medal “We were not expecting to win a medal, but hoping for it!” Compound Junior Women Sarah LANCE (USA) – Gold medal “I’m very happy. I had won a gold medal in Poland at the 2009 Indoor World Championships, but it’s the first time I win gold in an outdoor world championship. And what’s more, we broke the world record! My parents were attending the competition, and my family is watching me on TV from home. I think we’re going to barbecue tonight, to celebrate with the team and mess around.” Recurve Cadet Men KIM Joo Wan (KOR) – Gold medal “Of course at this moment I am happy, but in the final I didn’t perform as well as I did in practice in Korea. Actually, I expected to win with the team. What counts most is the fact that we trust each other. We are all dependent on each other and are always confident that the others will shoot well.” Vitaliy KOMONYUK (UKR) – Silver medal “I am happy with our performance. We lost, but Korea is such a strong nation. We will need a lot more practice in order to reach their level, but I hope that next time the championships will be ours!” Luca MARAN (ITA) – Bronze medal “I was not really nervous. I competed in Antalya and it was almost the same there. (He won the silver with the Italian team.) I’m going to celebrate with my family and friends when I go back to Italy.” Recurve Cadet Women CHOI Youri (KOR) – Gold medal “I did not care much about what the Russians were doing, but tried to concentrate on my own performance. Before the last arrow, we looked at the target with the scope, in order to know what we needed to tie Russia.” Sayana TSYREMPILOVA (RUS) – Silver medal “I like shooting in this stadium, it is beautiful. We were nervous today, and we had difficulties with the wind in the end. I’m going to attend the next matches and then train for tomorrow.” (The Korean girls, who had just beaten Russia for the gold, came and wished Tsyrempilova good luck for the individual final.) Lidiia SICHENIKOVA (UKR) – Bronze medal “We worked well as a team today. The main difficulty was the wind. It was not a problem to move from the field used in qualifications to the stadium. We are happy to have won the bronze medal match. Actually, we qualified in 2nd and were hoping to fight for the gold.”
Compound Cadet Men
Mario CARDOSO (MEX) – Gold medal
“We shot very well from the beginning. We were a little nervous but still managed to win! We were really good today. I was watching what the Australians were doing. When they shot a 5 in the first end it gave me a lot of confidence.”
Adolfo MEDINA (MEX) – Gold medal
“We won thanks to Galileo, our scope. It’s our team mascot. We take it with us to all the competitions.”
Riley WHITING (USA) – Bronze medal
“I live in Logan just 30 miles from here. We put a lot of work into these championships and we had specific team training for the last three months. It was all worth it now that we have this medal. We wanted gold, but bronze is just as good!”
“Tomorrow I will shoot in the individual bronze medal match. I have never met my opponent but maybe it’s better like this. I will focus on myself. I hope to benefit again from the home court feeling. All my family, my friends are there cheering! This is a once in a lifetime experience!”
Compound Cadet Women
Kailey JOHNSTON (USA) – Gold medal
“The wind was a big part of the match. We were a little bit stronger mentally. Paige PEARCE and I were team champions in Antalya last year. The competition was a little bit harder this time, but we have improved since last year.”
Paige PEARCE (USA) – Gold medal
“Considering the conditions, it went really well today. We helped each other and really worked as a team. All the US teams were in the stands cheering us on and now we’re going to pack our bows and go watch the other matches for the rest of the day. As for the individual final tomorrow, I’m really excited and I feel prepared. We’ll see how things turn out.”
Gabriela Yazmin TREVINO (MEX) – Silver medal
“We were confident because we trust each other and we get along very well with each other. The match was difficult at the end; we lost on just a few arrows.”
Elma Cristina QUIROGA (MEX) – Silver medal
“We felt really confident despite the wind. The competition was very tight, we fought arrow after arrow, but lost a few points here and there. We tried our best and we are happy we did it for Mexico!”
Stephanie Sarai SALINAS (MEX) – Silver medal
“I bought a silver crown pendant at a camp in Korea. I use it as an amulet and it helps me shoot better. Also, I turn to the sky and pray to God to make everything go well, He gives me strength.”
Jayalakshmi SARIKONDA (IND) – Bronze medal
“This match has been a rollercoaster for us, with both teams taking the lead one after another. At the end, we were a bit lucky and caught two lines in the last end, which allowed us to tie after official scoring. In the tie-break we were strong to take the bronze.”
