10 March 2010 - India dominates semifinals field in archery test event

India dominates semifinals field in archery test event New Delhi/Lausanne – 10 March 2010 Indian archers set up semifinal clashes mostly among themselves after dominant performances on the second day in the archery test event for Commonwealth Games in New Delhi today.
The set system for individual match play was used for the first time in a major international event at the Commonwealth Games Test Event in Delhi today and proved very successful. However, given the duration of the test event as proposed by the organisers, it was not possible to shoot the quarterfinals in five sets of three arrows each (as stated in the Rules Book), hence the three sets of six. The decision was taken in order to avoid adding one more day to the competition. It was explained during the team captains meet and there were no objections. The semi-finals that begin from tomorrow see an India-dominated field in the men's and women's individual recurve category.
In the men's recurve, the Indian trio of Tarundeep RAI, Rahul BANERJEE and KAPIL will be joined by the lone Malaysian CHU SIAN as they fight it out for the finals on March 12. In the team event, India, England, Scotland and Malaysia will fight for the medals.   It's a similar story for the women archers as the semi-finals tomorrow will see an all-Indian field in the individual women recurve category. SUSHMA, who beat English archer Louise Emma COLVILLE by a set today, will meet Deepika KUMARI in the first semi-finals, while team mates Pranitha VARDHINENI and Chekrovolu SWURO will fight it out in the second semi-final for a place in the finals. As for the teams, India will be joined in semifinals by Singapore, Malaysia and Wales.   The men’s compound is back to the familiar picture of India filling all but one semifinal spots with Muhammad Zaki MAHAZAN of Malaysia squeezing into the last 4. The Indian National Champion Chinna Raju SRITHER qualified along with compatriots Chungda SHERPA and Isaiad rajender SANAM. The teams qualified for the semifinals are Malaysia, Wales, England and (of course!) India.            The women’s compound is a much more open affair with four nations featuring in the semi finals. Top seed Nicky HUNT from England fell 0-4 in a surprise defeat by Tracey McGOWAN of Scotland in the quarterfinal. However in a similar England-Scotland match, Nichola SIMPSON beat Claudine JENNINGS 4-0. The other semifinalists are Lucy O’SULLIVAN from the Channel Island of Jersey (usually part of ArcheryGB but a separate country for the Commonwealth Games) and Kaur from India. England, Scotland, Malaysia and India advanced to the team semifinals that will be shot tomorrow. Open the Results page Vanahé ANTILLE FITA Communication
