Compound individual elimination matches
Antalya
As a recap, in the individual matches in the Compound Round, the athletes shoot at 50 metres at a Hit/Miss target face. The hit zone is only 10cm wide. They shoot a maximum of four sets of three arrows. The archer with the most hits (either 3, 2, 1, 0) wins the set. Each set is worth two points (if the set is tied, each archer gets one point). The athlete with the most set points wins the match.
Compound Men
Several of the top seeded archers from qualifications struggled in their 1/32 elimination matches. The No. 1 Sergio PAGNI (ITA) was eliminated by the No. 64! Marko JAMNIK (SLO) won the first set to lead 2-0. The scores then moved to 3-1, 4-2 and finally 5-3 for the Slovenian archer. As for Dietmar TRILLUS, the No. 3 from Canada led the No. 62 Tony WADDICK (NZL) 2-0, 3-1, 4-2, but the archer from New Zealand came back to tie at 4-4. The 2007 world champion TRILLUS was finally the best in the shoot-off. Meanwhile the No. 61 Felix BARRERAS (PUR) was fighting hard against the No. 4 Seppie CILLIERS (RSA). The scores were 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, then 4-4. The match went all the way to three shoot-offs, but this was not enough to decide the winner, for the two were still tied. Therefore the highest seeded archer, CILLIERS, was declared victorious. Among the top 4, the No. 2 Shaun TEASDALE (NZL) was the only one to win comfortably without going to the shoot-off. He scored 6-2 against Chingese RINCHINO (RUS). Another close match was that between the 2009 world Silver medallist Liam GRIMWOOD (GBR) and the world record holder Peter ELZINGA (NED). The scores evolved from 1-1 to 3-1 and 4-2 for the British archer. However ELZINGA came back at 4-4 and in the shoot-off needed only one arrow to win. The 2009 world Bronze medallist Stephen CLIFTON (NZL) qualified to the next round, but it’s over for Ruben OCHOA (MEX).
The matches were tight overall, with no one winning in straight sets at this stage. JAMNIK couldn’t repeat his performance in the 1/16 elimination round, where he lost 1-5 (1-1, 1-3, 2-3, 0-0) to the young Ben CLELAND (USA), a Bronze medallist at last year’s World Junior Championships. After all their struggles in the previous round, TRILLUS and CILLIERS qualified easily this time, 5-1 against Amir KAZEMPOOR (IRI) and Julio Ricardo FIERRO (MEX), respectively. Shaun TEASDALE, Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA) and Martin DAMSBO (DEN) also qualified. CLIFTON and ELZINGA displayed the closest match of this round, which ELZINGA won 5-4 after the shoot-off (evolution of the score: 2-2, 2-2, 3-2, 2-3).
Americans Ben CLELAND and Braden GELLENTHIEN raised their level in the 1/8 elimination round, both winning their match 6-0. CLELAND eliminated Spain’s José DUO (3-1, 2-1, 3-1) and GELLENTHIEN beat local archer Dincer EKIZ (3-2, 3-2, 2-1). A third American qualified for the quarterfinals, Rodger WILLET Jr., who defeated the No. 2 seed TEASDALE 5-3 (1-3, 3-2, 2-2, 3-2). In the other matches TRILLUS lost to Robert TIMMS 3-5 (3-1, 2-3, 3-3, 2-3); Martin DAMSBO was near perfect against Rob POLMAN (NED), winning 6-2 (3-2, 3-3, 2-2, 3-2). As in the previous rounds ELZINGA had another very tight match, this time against CILLIERS. The archers were tied at 4-4 after four sets. The South African finally won 5-4 after the shoot-off (2-3, 3-3, 2-2, 3-2).
Braden GELLENTHIEN was perfect in the quarterfinals. He defeated TIMMS 6-2 (3-3, 3-3, 3-2, 3-2). CELLIERS suffered only two misses, enough though to cost him the victory against SIGAUSKAS, who had just one miss. WILLET Jr. qualified easily over JIMENEZ, 5-1 (2-1, 3-2, 2-2). Ben CLELAND and Martin DAMSBO delivered a tight match. The scores were 0-2, 2-1, 2-2, 3-3 to end in a tie at 4 set points each. Both archers hit the yellow in their first shoot-off arrow. Then Ben CLELAND missed, thus allowing DAMSBO to claim victory with a hit.
So the first semifinal will feature DAMSBO and SIGAUSKAS, while the second one will be an American dual between GELLENTHIEN and WILLET Jr. this Friday on the beach.
Compound Women
The 2007 world champion Eugenia SALVI (ITA) beat Nilufer ERENOGLU (TUR) in the 1/32 elimination round. The Antalya winner Luzmary GUEDEZ (VEN) only qualified on 29th rank but she easily won her first round 5-1 (3-2, 2-2, 2-1). Ivana BUDEN (CRO) had a bit more difficulties to prevail over Esra SULUN (TUR), 5-3 (1-1, 2-2, 3-1, 1-1). Two other favourites had to go through a shoot-off! Anastasia ANASTASIO (ITA) was tied 4-4 (1-0, 0-1, 1-1, 2-2) against Matea KOLAREK (CRO). Sandrine VANDIONANT (FRA), 3rd in Porec, and Jelena BABININA (LTU) was also tied at 4-4 (3-1, 1-2, 1-3, 3-1). However the Italian and the French won in the shoot-off.
A lot of shoot-offs in the second round! Two of them went all the way! The recent European Champion and No. 4 seed Viktoria BALZHANOVA (RUS) and GUEDEZ finished tied at 4-4 (3-2, 2-3, 2-2, 1-1). The No. 3 seed Jamie VAN NATTA (USA) had to pull herself together and won the last two sets to tie VANDIONANT, 4-4 (2-3, 1-2,3-2, 3-2). Both matches could not break the tie during the maximum of three shoot-offs (one arrow per shoot-off). Therefore, the higher ranked archers, BALZHANOVA and VAN NATTA advanced to next round. Olga BOSCH (VEN), Fiona HYDE (AUS), Nicky HUNT (GBR), Didem TURKOGLU (TUR), Ashley WALLACE (CAN), Andrea GALES (GBR) and Linda OCHOA (MEX) all beat their opponents during the shoot-off.
In the 1/8 elimination round, the No. 1 seed Erika ANSCHUTZ (USA) had to go through a double shoot-off to pass over Olga BOSCH (VEN). The match finished tied (1-2, 3-2, 1-3, 2-1). Then both archer shot a hit in the first shoot-off arrow. Then only ANSCHUTZ hit the yellow. Ashley WALLACE (CAN) also had to go through a shoot-off against A- M. CRISANTO (MEX) 5-4, (2-2, 1-1, 2-1, 1-2, T1-T0). Same story for Anne LANTEE (FIN), born LAURILA, over Camilla SOEMOD (DEN) 5-4 (2-1, 1-2, 2-1, 1-2, T1-T0). The other favourites prevailed easily, except the No. 2 seed OCHOA who was upset by GALES 1-5 (3-3, 2-3, 1-3)
One single hit made the difference between the No. 1 seed ANSCHUTZ and the world champion LOGINOVA, 5-3 (2-2, 2-2, 3-2, 2-2). LANTEE had a strong win over European champion BALZHANOVA 6-0 (2-1, 2-1, 3-2). HUNT defeated VAN NATTA in a close match 5-3 (1-3, 3-2, 1-1, 1-2). The Porec winner, WALLACE is still the hunt for a second success in a row. Her first two sets were tight against GALES, but the Brit could not get any hit in the second part of the match. WALLACE won 6-2 (3-1, 2-3, 1-0, 3-0).
The semifinals and finals will be played on Friday afternoon on Antalya’s beach.
