Ecuador and Brazil set the pace at South American Youth and Masters Championships
Host nation Ecuador and Brazil each claimed six top seeds during qualification at the Daule 2026 South American Youth and Masters Open Championships on Thursday, with Ecuador’s Blanca Maritza Rodrigo Bueno edging Chile’s reigning champion Aurora Olea Prado in compound under-21 women.
Billed as the deepest field of returning medallists in Daule, the compound under-21 women’s event saw Rodrigo Bueno score 687 to finish four points ahead of Prado. The Ecuadorian improved by 35 points on her qualification score in Santiago last year, where she went on to win South American Championship silver behind the Chilean.
Ecuador also took the top seed in compound under-18 men, with Matias Joaquin Avila Barrera scoring 681 to finish eight points ahead of reigning champion Oscar Omar Enrique Verdugo Viñales of Chile. Avila Barrera improved by 76 points on his score from Santiago. The hosts also swept the top three places in compound under-18 women, led by Dariana Isabel Heredia Sanchez on 679.
Brazil’s Rafael Magalhães recorded the highest score of the day, shooting 698 to lead a Brazilian one-two-three in compound under-21 men. Henrique Mezzacapaqualified second with 690 after moving up from under-18, while Arthur Bremer de Oliveira completed the sweep with 673.
Chile, which topped the medal table in Santiago with 47 medals, claimed two top seeds through its recurve archers. Ángel Moises Vega Valdivia led recurve under-21 men with 653, 19 points ahead of Brazil’s Eduardo Diamantino, while Damian Rojas topped recurve under-15 men with 658.
Brazil dominated the masters categories, taking all four 50+ top seeds in recurve and compound. Moisés Guimarães led recurve 50+ men with 640, 15 points ahead of Gildardo Anselmo Fuentes of Colombia. Fabiola Dergovics, Vanderlei Dantas and Marcelle Artamonoff topped the remaining masters fields.
Both recurve 50+ divisions will crown new South American champions after Argentine archers, who are absent this year, filled every podium place in those events in Santiago.
Fabiola Dergovics (602), Vanderlei Dantas (665) and Marcelle Artamonoff (657) topped the remaining masters fields.
In barebow, Ecuador’s Jorge Ulpiano Proaño Ruiz led the combined 50+ and under-21 men’s field with 533, six points ahead of Jeetendra Deonarine of Trinidad and Tobago.
Competition continues on Friday with the Open individual eliminations and finals.
