Great Archery Names at the Universiade Lausanne – 15 August 2011 KIM Woojin (KOR), 2011 world champion
The Summer Universiade 2011 started on 12 August in Shenzhen, China. The archery competition is being held from 14-18 August. The official practice took place on Sunday and the competition started on Monday. The Olympic team champion IM Dong-Hyun and many other great archery names will compete for the medals. The official archery practice and equipment control was held on Sunday 14 August. From Monday on, archers coming from 34 countries will compete in the recurve and compound divisions in individual, team and mixed team events. Some of the archers have already an impressive career.
Recurve Men
Several Olympic medallists are competing in this category. The most famous of them is probably the double Olympic team champion (2004 and 2008) from Korea IM Dong-Hyun. He will be challenged by his 19-year-old teammate KIM Woojin, who is no less than the newly-crowned world champion from Turin! Other archers to watch include the 2004 Olympic team bronze medallist Dmytro HRACHOV (UKR), the 2008 Olympic team silver medallist Mauro NESPOLI (ITA), and Juan Rene SERRANO (MEX) who was 4th individually in Beijing. Some others have had brilliant results at the World Cup this year such as Joseph FANCHIN (USA), who was 3rd at the stage 3 in Ogden in early August.
Recurve Women
The big favourites in this category will be the three Koreans HAN Gyeonghee, JUNG Dasomi and KI Bo Bae, who have won several World Cup medals and became world Champions last July as a team. Ksenia PEROVA and Inna STEPANOVA (RUS) are expected to be on top, too. Experts will notice as well the 2004 field world champion Jessica TOMASI (ITA), the 2009 world indoor champion Karina WINTER (GER) and the 2008 Olympian Aida ROMAN (MEX).
Compound Men
Some young but talented athletes will compete for the compound men's medals such as Simon ROUSSEAU (CAN), team bronze medallist at the 2011 World Championships, and the Russians Alexander DAMBAEV and Denis SEGIN, European team champions in 2010. They will be challenged by the 2006 European champion Sébastien BRASSEUR (FRA) as well as strong teams from the USA and Iran.
Compound Women
The leader of the World Cup ranking Parsamehr MAHTAB (IRI) will be among the big favourites to win, together with her compatriot Seyedeh-Vida HALIMIANAVVAL, who is currently 6th in the ranking. Some participants have already had the good fortune to win medals at World Cups or World Championships, such as Linda OCHOA (MEX) or the world vice-champion Pascale LEBECQUE (FRA). One should also keep a watchful eye on the Koreans SEOK Ji-Hyun and SEO Jung-Hee as well as the 2010 European champion Viktoria BALZHANOVA (RUS) and the 2008 junior world champion Kendal NICELY (USA).
All the news and results will be available on www.worldarchery.org or www.sz2011.org/Universiade/. For the first time in Universiade history, FISU, the governing body of international university sport, is offering live streaming on its TV websitewww.fisu.tv, showing a selection of events of the sports program and highlights from all 24 sports on the program.
