Three Polish archers in recurve quarterfinals

Archers of all the individual categories played their elimination matches today until the 1/8 elimination round. The top 8 athletes of each category were pre-seeded in the 1/16 elimination round, while the others had to go through the 1/48 and 1/24 matches.

The recurve archers played their matches in the Set System (5 sets of 3 arrows). Each set was worth 2 points, and the archers who earned 6 set points won the match. In case of a tied match (5-5), a one-arrow shoot-off closest to centre was played.
Recurve Junior Men The favourite country Korea lost two of their three archers in this category. The No. 1 KIM Seong Hoon was taken out by the No. 16 Heorhiy IVANYTSKYY. The first two sets were tied at 29 and 26 points. Then the Ukrainian took a 4-2 set-points lead after winning the third set 29-28. He scored 29 points again to conclude the match in four sets (KIM had 26), 6-2. The 2006 cadet world champion and 2008 junior team world champion, Ryan TYACK (AUS), took care of the No. 3 seed KIM Joo Wan (KOR), who already won two gold and a silver at previous youth world championships. TYACK took the first set, 29-28, and the second one, 28-27, to lead 4-0. KIM was better in the third set, 28-27, to come back at 2-4 set points. However the Australian did not let his chance go in the fourth set, scoring a perfect 30! KIM only had 26 and conceded defeat 2-6.

The current youth world champion SUNG Wookyeong (KOR) is still in the hunt to defend his title. In the 1/8 elimination round he beat M. J. KROGSHEDE (DEN), 6-0 (29-28, 28-26, 27-23). The Danish was actually the compound junior men world champion in 2008, and he now shoots a recurve bow. The 2009 silver medallist Rick VAN DER VEN (NED) is also still in the game. He beat Rajgovind SWANSI (IND) in the 1/8 elimination round, 7-3 (29-28, 28-23, 26-28, 27-27, 28-27). Two other favourites are still in: the No. 4 seed Gaël PREVOST (FRA) and the No. 7 seed Atanu DAS (FRA).
Recurve Junior Women The surprise of the day was that of the Polish archer Paula WYCZECHOWSKA (POL). She won four matches including her 1/8 elimination round against the No. 7 seed Carina CHRISTIANSEN (DEN) 6-0 (27-26, 30-26, 29-28). Natalia LESNIAK (POL) also qualified with two convincing wins over Tatania SEGINA (RUS) 6-4 (27-22, 26-28, 27-25, 27-29, 27-24) and Miranda LEEK (USA) 7-3 (28-30, 27-26, 28-24, 28-28, 27-25). The No. 20 Alexandru POPESCU (ROM) won over the No. 4 seed Yuki KAWATA (JPN) 6-2 (28-27, 30-28, 28-28, 29-29). The No. 26 Hubert SOBON from Poland beat the No. 7 Daniel LUCAS (FRA) 7-1 (28-27, 26-26, 29-28, 28-27).   Recurve Cadet Women The No. 51 seed Iilgin KIZILGUNESLER (TUR) was the story of the day in this category! She beat Teona KUTALADZE (GEO), Anastasia PAVLOVA (UKR), WANG Simeng (CHN) and finally the No. 3 seed KANG Chae Young (KOR). Against the Korean, the Turkish athlete won the first set 27-26. The next three sets resulted in draws (26, 26, 29), before the Korean won the fifth set (29-24) to tie the match at 5-5. In the shoot-off, both archers scored a 10 but KIZILGUNESLER’s arrow was closer to the centre.

All the other high seeded athletes went through. The only upset was the victory of the No. 10 seed LI Jiaman (CHN) over the No. 7 seed Dobromira DANAILOVA (BUL). The match ended in a draw at 5-5 (26-29, 27-25, 28-27, 28-28, 28-29). Then both archers shot a 9 in the shoot-off but LI’s arrow was better.
