Nymburk weather good for world records
Nymburk (CZE) – 18 August 2009

After a turbulent night with heavy rain storms with much thunder and lightning the field crew worked till 02:00 in the morning to get the field back in shape. They did a tremendous job and the field was perfectly in order for the morning session. By the time the archers arrived, the field was set as if nothing had happened the night before.
With the temperature slightly colder and a little more wind on the previous day, the archers started the day on 50 metres. LEE Ouk Soo (KOR)—who led the Compound Open Men class after the Monday's session—kept his comfortable lead and finished the day ranked in 1st place. In the process of doing so he also broke the record for the FITA Round. The old record was from Kevin EVANS (CAN) with 1389 points and is now set at 1392.
In Recurve Standing Women LEE Hwa Sook (KOR) never gave up her top seed from the day before. She frustrated the competition by breaking one record after the other. After her world record at 60 metres on Monday she broke the 50m record by five points and set the bar at 320 points. On top of this LEE shot a new record for the FITA Round as well with 1284. The previous record of 1258 was held by her as well.
Other world records set this morning:
Ø Compound Men Team: Korea with 4066 points (previous: 4043)
Ø Recurve Women Team: Korea with 3723 points (previous: 3634)
The afternoon session was the stage for the Visually Impaired division (men/women), Compound Open Women, Compound W1 Men, Recurve W2 Men, and Recurve Standing Men. With many world records being broken in the previous sessions, one could expect many to be broken yet again. We were not disappointed; no less than six new world records were shot in the afternoon session.
In the visually impaired men’s division Massimiliano PIOMBO (ITA) set an amazing three new records: 309 (262) for 80cm face and 330 (308) for 122cm face. He also set the record for the VI international round at 1202 (972). For the Compound Open Women class Mel CLARKE (GBR) set the 50m bar at 338 (336), while Danielle BROWN (GBR) set the record for the FITA Round (144 arrows) at 1367 (1362). Pippa BRITTON (GBR) together with her teammates BROWN and CLARKE set a new team record which is now 4065 (3998). Asking some of the archers what could be the cause of so many records being broken, they all agreed on one thing; that the weather had been perfect up till now. Monday was a little hot but Tuesday was the perfect shooting weather. There was a little wind but it did not seem to bother them. We can expect some interesting matches during the elimination rounds on Wednesday. Dean ALBERGA FITA Communication
