Turkey in the spotlight!

The weather ceased to be kind to the competitors and spectators, and it had become quite cool.   The day started with the W1 Compound Men. Norbert MURPHY (CAN) was delighted to receive his first ever world championship medal when he took the bronze. The surprise in this event was the defeat of top seed Jeff FABRY (USA) by Peter KINIK of Slovakia. “It just didn’t go right for me today”, FABRY said.

In W2 Recurve Women, Lelia MAUFRAS DU CHATELLIER gave the French team their first medal of the championships when she won the bronze. The gold match was a very noisy affair as Gizem GIRISMEN (TUR) has made a lot of friends here and her opponent was a local girl, Marketa SIDKOVA. GIRISMEN eventually won the gold. “Success is only success if it is shared and inspirational”, the Turk said after her victory.

In the W2 Recurve Men class, Russell WOLFE (USA), at his first time in a major international event, triumphed over Antonino LISOTTA (ITA) to win the bronze medal. The No. 1 seed Muhamad Salam SIDIK (MAS) won his gold medal match against LEE Hong Gu (KOR), looking amazingly calm throughout.

The next matches were for the Standing Women Recurve and the Koreans came away with two medals, bronze for LEE Hwa Sook and silver for KIM Ran Sook. However, the gold went to Eliane SALDEN-OTTEN (NED) who shot consistently throughout. “It was a very difficult match as we were always about equal”, SALDEN-OTTEN said.

Towards the end of the bronze medal match for Standing Men Recurve, the rain started to fall and persisted throughout the next match as well. It affected some competitors more than others but did not upset Mustafa AK (TUR) who took the gold against Fabrice MEUNIER (FRA). Timur TUCHINOV (RUS) was ecstatic when he took the bronze medal against the No. 2 seed LEE Hak Young (KOR).

The rain cleared up over the lunch break but kept breaking out from time to time during the afternoon. All the Open Compound matches were held during the afternoon. In the women’s bronze medal match, Olga POLEGAEVA (RUS) denied the British a clean sweep of the medals by beating Pippa BRITTON for the bronze. Danielle BROWN (GBR) beat teammate Mel CLARKE for the gold.

The men’s bronze match was perhaps the most exciting of the day, going to two shoot-offs, with the possibility of a third as one of the arrows was a close call, but Fred STEVENS (GBR) was finally victorious against Jonathan MIZE (USA). The gold final between Pavlo NAZAR (UKR) and Kevin EVANS (CAN) saw the Canadian always ahead but never by more than 5 points so that it was not possible to be sure of the result until the last end.   Ann WEBB FITA Communication
