World Archery Championships – Quotes of the Compound Qualifications

Today was the qualifications day for Compound in Ulsan (KOR). Read some quotes from competitors:   Reo WILDE (USA)   Compound Men
Reo WILDE (USA) – 1st “There are lots of great shooters on the field. I’m not better than the others but it was my day today. It’s the best archers in the world and we all come here hoping to win. I just want to do the best I can.”   Stephen CLIFTON (NZL) – 5th “It’s phenomenal. I wasn’t expecting it. I just hope to shoot my best and if it brings me to the gold medal I’m happy!”
HWANG Saengwook (KOR) “I did my best and really tried to concentrate on the target, but my scores are not as high as I wanted and I’m a little disappointed. I was nervous and tried to calm down, but it was difficult. Actually I’m not a professional archer, I’m a club member and it’s the first time that the Korean archery team selected a club member. My objective here is to win a medal with my team.”
Compound Women
Linda OCHOA (MEX) – 1st “I’m very happy! I was very calm and started really well. Even though I knew my scores could drop down at any moment, I was able to maintain my level throughout the day. I like shooting in this exceptional stadium. It really is a world-class venue, the best and biggest I have ever competed in. It is a little nerve-wrecking but it is mostly very motivating. It is nice to perform in a venue designed especially for archery and not for another sport like golf, for example. I think this is a very encouraging factor for all the athletes competing here.”
Ivana BUDEN (CRO)Ivana BUDEN (CRO) – 6th “I feel good. My shooting was OK today. A lot of things have been bothering me lately and I’m still fixing them. For this reason I’m glad with my scores today. I want to go back to the level that I was at before I had these problems, I want to enjoy the week and win!”
Kendal NICELY (USA) On her Korean experience so far: “We have been practicing and have also had a lot of downtime since we arrived in Ulsan last Thursday. We went to a show with Korean star singers Sunday night. I enjoyed it, it was very cultural. I really like Korea! It’s one of the best places I’ve been so far. It’s also the furthest away from home that I’ve ever been. I travelled from New York City via Tokyo and it was such a long journey. I’m glad we came here three days early to get used to the time difference. I was so tired at first but now I’m OK.”
Tania FORNI (SUI) “For the Europeans it’s amazing to shoot in such a big stadium and before a large crowd. It’s my first time here and it’s a really special experience.”
SEO Jung-Hee (KOR) “The wind made it a little bit difficult today, but the weather was not as bad as I expected. I’m happy because we came out first as a team. I am nervous competing here in my own country and have prepared even more than before. My goal in Ulsan is not to win individually, but to have a good result in the team competition. We have trained a lot together as a team and that is most important for us.”
SEOK Ji Hyun (KOR) “For my last international competition (Summer Universiade 2009 in Belgrade) I travelled abroad and had to adjust to jet-lag. It is easier this time because I’m performing in Korea. The main problem here is the strong wind because Ulsan is located at the seaside. Because of the weather conditions, I did not expect great scores. I felt a lot of pressure shooting at home because Korea is a strong archery nation. Compound is not the main archery discipline in my country and I don’t have much experience, but I want to win a gold medal. My first goal is to win with the team, and my second goal is to have a good result in the individual competition. In order to achieve this I hope for more support from the audience.”
