The Outdoor Archery World Championships are taking place until Sunday 15 July at the Festwiese of Leipzig, Germany. Under a sunny sky the day finished with a World Record by the American ladies in the team competition: with a total of 4157 points, they beat their own previous record by 5 points! In the team Anschutz was superb shooting 1408 points.   Compound Men Two men were tied at first place at then end of the 90 metres (m) session: Australian Coghlan and Iranian Zamaninejad both shot 341 points at this distance. They were closely followed by Boe (NOR) and Willett (USA), both with 339. At 5th and 6th rank we temporarily found Dutch Elzinga (338) and Finnish Haavisto (337). A small gap had already appeared with their pursuers: Brasseur (FRA), Jimenez (ESA) and Wilde R. (USA) were three points behind between 7th and 9th place. New 90m World Record holder Hofer (SUI) –he shot 348 last Sunday- did not seem to feel so comfortable today at this distance. He provisionally took 34th place with 326 points.   The most regular archer in this category half-way was the American Willett (4th at 90m and 2ndat 70m). He was temporarily leading the Compound Men qualification with 688 points with the Australian Coghlan just one point behind him. The best score at 70m was shot by Pagni with 352 points. This allowed the Italian to get back from 26th to 4th place (681). Another archer to make a big leap ahead was Danish Damsbo from 12th to 3rd (348/681). A third athlete, Haavisto (FIN), was 5th with the same provisional total. Three other archers had the same score ranking between 6th and 8th places: Boe (NOR), Zamaminejad (IRI) and Jimenez (ESA) with 680 points.   There was no changes in the top 3 places in Compound Men after 50m: Willeth kept the lead (1033 points), Coghlan stayed 2nd(1031) and Pagni 3rd (1029). The Swedish Lundin, shooting the second best score of the distance (351) was 4th with the same score as the Italian and only 36 arrows left. The highest score at 50m (351) was achieved by the American Gellenthien who rose up to 8th place with a total of 1024 points. A new Russian archer named Silakov appeared in the top 30 after he shot the 4thbest score of the distance (347/1005).      Jiri Klich (CZE) The last distance (30m) in Compound Men gave a hard time to many top ranked archers. Except for Willett (USA) and Jimenez (ESA) who shot the 4th score of the distance (both 360 points), all the other top 10 archers ranked over 13th at the distance. The situation at the end of qualification is that the American Willett is 1st with 1393 points, 7 points ahead of Norwegian Boe and Italian Pagni. The Australian Coghlan who led almost all the way since this morning lost 7 places and is now 8th with 1381 points. The Portuguese archer Santos is ranked 128th and is the last qualified in Compound Men with 1269.   The team competition in Compound Men was tough with 40 participating teams! After the first distance USA was leading with 1004 points in front of the Netherlands (1002). Two teams were close behind just below the 1000 barrier: Australia with 999 points and Iran with 998. In this category the cut (last qualifying place = 16th) was temporarily taken by Italy with 972 points.   Thanks to the great shooting by Willet, the Americans (2038 points) increased their lead half-way with a 10-point advantage over their first pursuer Australia (2028). The latter were also ten points ahead of the 3rd ranked nation at that point, the Netherlands (2018). The places were closer between 4th and 8th with respectively Spain with 2010, France with 2008, Iran with 2007 and Norway with 2004. The qualifying limit was then temporarily set by the host country Germany with 1981 points at 16th place.   The top three teams did not change after the third distance (50m): 1. USA, 2. Australia, 3. Netherlands. However, Spain went down to 7th place with a temporary total of 3022 points to the benefit of Sweden who rose up to 4th place (3035). The local team Germany kept its 16th and last qualifying place (2991). At that time they stood 8 points ahead of Belgium that ranked 17th.   The situation has not changed for the top 3: the Americans finish 1st with a total of 4153 points, the Australians are 2nd with 4129 and the Dutch are 3rd with 4111. The cut is for the host Germany at 4061 points.   German lady preparing next shot    Compound Women Van Natta (USA) already took a small advantage over her opponents with a score of 347 points at 70m. Her first pursuer was team-mate Anschutz with 344. Not far behind were Swedish Ericsson (343) and Olofsson (342) and German Weihe (342). Four ladies then followed with 341 points: Markovich (NED), Chan (PHI), Soemod (DEN) and Ochoa A. (MEX).   Bad series for leader Van Natta (USA) who shot the 10th score at 60m with 345 points for a total half-way of 692 and the 2nd position! It was her fellow countrywoman Anschutz who realized the best score at this distance with 354 points. She took the lead with 698 points. Ericsson kept the 3rd rank with 689 points, the same temporary score as local Weihe (4th). The French Bouillot leaped ahead from 18th to 7th place after she scored the second best total of the distance (348) for a total of 685. Another archer to improve consistently was Belgian Haemhouts coming back from 22nd to 9th place thanks to her third top score at 60m (347/682).   Anschutz confirmed her good form of the day shooting the best score at 50m (351). She kept her lead with 1049 points over Van Natta who totalizes 1040 so far. The two Americans dug an important gap with pursuers, Van Natta being 10 points ahead of third ranked Ericsson (SWE). The Russian Loginova made her appearance in the provisional top 10 shooting the third best score at 50m (345/1022). Her two famous team-mates Kazantseva and Goncharova kept staying in ambush at 15th and 21st places, respectively. Other archers took the best of the 50m distance, as Croatian Buden shooting the fourth best score (345) and raising to 24th rank and Slovenian Marcen (5th score with 343) coming up to 14th.   Anschutz kept the leadership in the Compound Women individual category at the end of qualifications with a great score over the 1400 barrier (1408 points, just 3 points below the World Record) and therefore a 10-point advantage over team-mate Van Natta (1398). Third ranked is Swedish Ericsson with 1389. All archers are qualified for the next round in this category, as they are 73 and elimination will start in 1/64 (128 archers).   After the first distance in the team event USA (1019 points) was leading with an 8-point advantage over Sweden (1011) and 9 over Mexico (1010). There are 18 teams registered in this category and the cut was provisionally set by Chinese Taipei at 963 points at the end of this distance.      The Festwiese of LeipzigImitating their male counterparts, the American ladies increased their advantage up to 14 points. They were leading the qualification half-way with 2056 points in front of France (2041) and Sweden (2038). Not far behind was provisionally Russia with 2034 points and then Mexico with 2032. The cut in Compound Women was for South Africa, ranked 16th with 1959 points.   Some changes in the top position in the team competition with Russia leaping up to 2nd place thanks to the great performance of Loginova. The Russian ladies scored 3053 points so far and were 30 points (!) behind USA. Third was France with 3050 points. Chinese Taipei and Iran will certainly be unable to reach the cut, as they are far behind the 16th ranked team, South Africa.   The day finished with a World Record by the American ladies in the team competition: with a total of 4157 points, they beat their own previous record by 5 points! No need to say they ranked 1st far ahead of Russia (4121) and France (4118). Only two teams were eliminated in this category, namely Chinese Taipei and Iran finishing at 17th and 18th places.   Tomorrow it is turn for Recurve Women to start competition and look for qualification for the World Championships elimination round, as well as win places for next year’s Olympic Games!
