World Championships Leipzig 2007 – Quotes of the day 3
Leipzig – 09 July 2007
We asked four questions to archers today and we took the opportunity to talk to many nations present at the World Championships.
1. How did you prepare for the World Championships?
2. What is your main goal?
3. Who do you think will win the medals?
4. How did you shoot today ? (only for Recurve Women)
Recurve Women
Natalia Valeeva (ITA)
Natalia Valeeva (ITA) – new European Record for a FITA Round with 1369 points
1. You know, I am a mother with three kids and a husband. I cannot train as much as in the past, but I went every time I could.
2. Medals, hopefully in individual and in team.
3. I hope there will be many European archers on the podium, but the Koreans and the Chinese will be tough to beat.
4. I met my expectations for today. I actually shot even better at practice two weeks ago. I had to adapt a bit during the first four ends at 50m, but the rest went well.
Bérengère Schuh (FRA) – new French Record for a FITA Round with 1356 points
1. I trained well. Now I am able to shoot without waiting the last 45 seconds or so of an end. This is a big step for me and it wasn’t possible a month ago in Antalya. It puts less pressure on me; it gives me more time to shoot with the wind. I am also not distracted by the results of my opponent in match.
2. A team Olympic qualification is the main objective. Although I shot really well today, I’ll be happy if I reach the top 16 individually.
3. Korea is the true favourite in team but everything is possible for the other medals. I remember that in New York 2003 we qualified the team on 12th place and moved up to 4th place. Individually, I think that Valeeva is very strong. I am sure she wants to do better than the two 4th places she earned at the last two World Cup stages.
4. I am just amazed! I beat the FITA Round French Record that I established one month ago in Antalya. I also beat the French Records at 70m and 50m. I was just a bit tired at 30m. I was shooting with high pace and I was watching Valeeva a bit. I was actually glad when I was shooting quicker than her. That meant I had a good rhythm. Overall, the team beat the French Record by 48 points so that’s a superb day!
Elena Tonetta (ITA) – on the official poster of these World Championships
1. I am training every day for seven years now, but I missed a lot of training recently because I had my exams for the High School diploma.
2. Of course, I would like to qualify for the Olympic Games.
3. I want to win, but I guess Sung-Hyun Park from Korea has the best chances. I see another Korean on the podium and my team-mate Valeeva. For the teams, I think Korea, Italy and Russia.
4. I was average today and I could have done much better. Twelve-arrow matches are different than 144-arrows FITA Round, so I hope to do better on Wednesday.
Khadija Abbouba (MAR) – Moroccan Record for a FITA Round
1. I train three times a week, mainly at 70m. I shoot 120-130 arrows per training. I am focusing on the overall gesture and not on a particular point. I want a good flow.
2. My main goal was to enjoy the competition and to take advantage of the experience of the archers I met.
3. I hope that Schuh will get a medal and I also wish the best of luck to my Polish and American target partners of today.
4. I shot well. I had a lot of positive emotions and I was very happy to be around archers of such a high level.
Victoria Beloslyudtseva (KAZ)
1. I was training for three weeks, six days a week, and twice a day.
2. I want to qualify for the Olympic Games.
3. Korea is very good.
4 I’m not so happy, but it wasn’t too bad after all. Actually, my results were like in Kazakhstan.
Yeung Ying Ying (HKG)
1. I started with my training three to four days a week about one month ago.
2. I’m just here for the experience.
3. China and Korea have the best chance to win.
4. I didn’t feel well while I was shooting.
Kirsten Niles (CAN)
1. I prepared rather mentally than physically. As I am suffering from some kind of target panic, I put a great deal of emphasis on match plays with other people.
2. I am here for the experience. I have never taken part at an event which is so huge.
3. So far, I assume that Korea might be the winner in my category.
4. I shot well today. I was closed to my personal best. It’s great to be among archers of such a high level.
Bérengère Schuh (FRA)
Recurve Men
Magnus Petersson (SWE)
1. As you know I broke my bow at the last World Cup in Antalya, so I received a new one. I spent some time to tune it, but otherwise I didn’t change my training routine.
2. The qualification for the Olympic Games is my main goal, such as many other archers. Basically, I hope to win as many matches as possible.
3. Of course, I hope it will be me. The teams I consider to be very good are Italy, India, and Korea.
Jacek Proc (POL)
1. During the last month I trained almost all the time. I had only two or three days without training at all.
2. Last time I reached the 23rd place and this time I would like to reach the same or even higher.
3. I bet Korea will make it. They are very strong. Also Italy and Ukraine might have a chance.
Brendon O’Hanlon (IRL)
1. I only had training for a few days. Moreover, I joined a couple of competitions. That should be enough.
2. I would like to reach top 16.
3. I really don’t have a clue. I leave the assumption to other people.
Bogdan Stuliçtowa (QAT) - coach of Ali Ahmed Salem
1. We were spending two weeks in Berlin-Pankow from the end of June to the beginning of July. There we had our training camp and we were also joining a local competition.
2. This is Qatar’s first experience with such a big tournament. We have to use the opportunity to fight for Olympic qualification. Our goal is at least 1280 points in qualifications.
3. Everything is possible! The difference between the first and the 64th archer is only very small. Furthermore, you have to take circumstances like the weather into consideration.
Compound Men
Hiroshi Tanebe (JPN)
1. Because of my full-time work I have only limited time for training. Thus I was only shooting at the weekends. I also joined the training camp for the Japanese National Team at the beginning of July.
2. I want to shoot as many arrows as I can, of course.
3. Actually, the potentials are equal among many archers. Anyway, I suppose that Reo Wilde has very good chances to win.
Gerhard Kranabeter (AUT)
1. I didn’t prepare at all. Actually, I was only taken here. The tournaments before were hopefully enough training for me.
2. First of all, I need to get used to the conditions. I want to find my usual shooting routine again. I don’t expect a certain positioning. Anyway, there are just the best shooters at a World Championship.
Compound Women
Maja Marcen (SLO)
1. I was shooting six times a week and 160 arrows a day.
2. I would be content if I reach top 32.
3. There are three favourites: Erika Anschutz, Jamie Van Natta, and Petra Ericsson.
Jurgita Matausaitiene (LTU)
1. I was training three times a week for about two hours each time.
2. I hope to reach the best results for myself.
3. The USA has quite good chances, they’re pretty good.
