Leipzig “LIVE” – Compound Men Elimination Matches

Today fans followed LIVE reports of Compound elimination matches.

Five rounds were contested at the Festwiese this Wednesday. After the Women division this morning, it was the Men’s turn to compete for a place in the semi-finals. The matches started at 2:00 pm (local time).   1st round: Elzinga (NED) – Kichkin (KAZ) The Dutch man, one of the favourites, was immediately in trouble when his opponent from the Kazakhstan shot a perfect 60 in the first end of the match. Elzinga came back to tie the match at 117. However, the Dutch archer lost it in the shoot-off! He shot a disappointing 8 while his opponent got a 9. First upset of the afternoon!   1st round: Goico de Lara (DOM) – Timms (AUS) The 2006 Cadet World Champion Goico de Lara learned the lesson of high level competition in his first elimination match of these championships. He was already trailing 54-56 after six arrows. Although he shot a good 57 in the second end he could never come back. Timms was victorious in this first round with a score of 115-111.   1st round: Tanabe (JPN) – Karsenty (ISR) Today was Tanabe’s birthday! He gave himself a gift by beating Karsenty in a shoot-off! The archers were tied at 116 at the end of the match and tied again after the first arrow of the shoot-off (9-9). They needed to shoot a second arrow and Tanabe took the advantage X10-9 to win the match.     1st round: Clifton (NZL) – Nico Haavisto (FIN) Another shoot-off took place close to the match between Tanabe and Karsenty, with the New Zealander Clifton and the Finn Haavisto tied at 114. Clifton won the shoot-off 10-9.     1st round: Tsou (TPE) – Lang (MAS) This was the most exciting match of the first round! Both archers were shoulder to shoulder at 114. They tied at 10 with the first arrow of the shoot-off and then at 9 with the second. Finally the archer from Chinese Taipei was better at the third arrow with a 10 against a 9 for his opponent.   2nd round: Genet (FRA) – White (GBR) This is was a very good match between two fine archers. White started with X10-10-9-9-X10-10, while Genet shot X10-9-10-9-X10-9. It is worth noting that an X10 is also worth 10 points, but the arrow hits the smallest ring right in the centre. The British archer led 58-57 at the half-way mark and did not let go, shooting a strong 59 in the second end. He beat the Frenchman 117-112.  2nd round: Sitar (SLO) - Gellenthien (USA) Gellenthien did not budge against Sitar who was a medallist at the 2001 World Championships in Beijing. The American was already led comfortably, 57-53, at the halfway mark and clinched the match with a score of 114-110.  2nd round: Dos Santos (BRA) – Boe (NOR) This was the blockbuster match of the second round! Dos Santos started with a low 7 but managed a 1-point advantage half-way through the match. He was leading 55-54 at that point. The Brazilian kept his 1-point advantage after nine arrows (83-82). Unfortunately for him, he could not hold it until the end... He shot 9-8-10 with his last three arrows, while Boe scored 10-9-10. Victory for Boe by 111-110!   2nd round: Ochoa (MEX) – Beaud (FRA) The experienced Ochoa had a low first end of 54, compared to the 57 points scored by Beaud. The Mexican came back in the second end, but not enough, finally loosing 112-113. Ochoa said: “My first end was too low to win this match. That’s OK. I was lacking a bit of practice before coming here. It’s always enjoyable to be at a World Championships!”     2nd round: Burri (SUI) – Brasseur (FRA) The young Swiss (2006 Cadet World silver medallist) started well with three 10s and had a 1-point lead over European Champion Brasseur after six arrows (57-56). Burri then got a little nervous and shot a couple of 8s in the second end. The Frenchman did not miss the opportunity and shot 59 to win the match 115-112.   3rd round: Brasseur (ESP) – Custers (NED) This match was breath-taking! Custers concluded the first end shooting three 10s and taking a 2-point advantage half-way through (57-55). Then both archers shot four 10s in a row! Custers did not finish so well with an 8 and a 9. This allowed Brasseur to come back and tie the match at 114. In the first shoot-off, they both shot a 10. On the second shoot-off, the Frenchman almost missed the 10 ring shooting a liner. The archers remained equal. With his very last possible arrow, Brasseur managed to stay in the 10, but Custers dropped to the 9 and let Brasseur advance!     3rd round: Brayford (CAN) – Duo (ESP) The Canadian Brayford had already enjoyed a great day after upsetting the world no. 1 Jimenez in the previous round (114-113). He then went to another close fight with Duo. The Spaniard had a 1-point lead half-way, but the Canadian came back and tied the match at 115.Brayford just missed the 10 in the shoot-off and his opponent, the 2007 World Indoor silver medallist, did not miss the opportunity to shoot a 10 and win this match.     3rd round: White (GBR) – Freeman (AUS) White’s run finished in the third round against the 2003 World Champion Freeman. The Australian was dazzling, shooting two ends of 58 and 60, while White could not do better than 56 and 58. Freeman qualified for the next round by 118-114.     3rd round: Lundin (SWE) – Van Zutphen (NED) – World Champion is out! Another very close match this afternoon! Both archers did not leave the yellow rings in the first end: Lundin shot 10-9-10-9-9-9, while Van Zutphen scored 10-9-9-X10-9-9. The match was thus tied at 56. Defending World Champion, the Swedish Lundin, started the second end with an 8, a bad shot from which he could never recover. Van Zutphen shot a superb 59 (9-X10-10-10-10-10) to win the match 115-113! 1/8 round: Gellenthien (USA) – Hofer (SUI) The wind rose a bit for this round. These two archers already met at the World Cup in Antalya last month and Gellenthien won that encounter. The American had the best start shooting 57 in the first end while Hofer scored 56. However, the Swiss shot three 10s in a row in the second end, then adding three 9s to reach 113. The American suffered from a low 8 also finishing 113. This meant a shoot-off to decide the winner! Gellenthien and Hofer both shot 9 with their first additional arrow, but, while the Swiss then shot another 9, his opponent hit the 10 to stay alive in these worlds!

Gellenthien said: “The wind was really tricky today. I read it a bit better in the first end, but then Patrizio was more accurate in the second end. I was getting nervous, but during the shoot-off my second arrow went just perfect and it ended in the X10.”     1/8 round: Boe (NOR) – Brasseur (FRA) Brasseur was now on a roll! He shot a good 57 (9-10-9-10-10-9) and followed with a close-to-perfection series score of 59 (10-X10-X10-10-9-X10) to win the match with a 116-110. The Norwegian could never recover from a poor first end of 52 points. Exit the no. 2 seed!   1/8 round: Damsbo (DEN) – Gates (RSA) After defeating 2006 World Cup winner Reo Wilde in the previous round (117-115), Gates then faced the young, talented Damsbo who seemed to finally be holding his nerve during matches. This was another nerve-wracking match! The Dane did not start well with a 9-8-8 but continued with an excellent 10-X10-10. Intermediate score for Damsbo: 55. The South African was also having trouble getting into the match, shooting 9-9-8 and 10-9-9 for a temporary 54 total. Both archers raised their game in the second half of the march and Damsbo scored 9-10-10-9-9-9. This last 9 made all the difference. Gates shot an 8 with his last arrow, giving victory to his opponent (111-110)!   NB: Archers start shooting four ends of three arrows from the quarter-finals on. 1/4 final: Trillius (CAN) – Coghlan (AUS) The Australian had the better start shooting 29 in the first end, whereas Trillius scored 28. He even increased his lead half-way to 58-56. However, the Canadian came back with a perfect end of 30 and tied the match at 86. Trillius continued with another perfect end and pulled off a victory by 116-115. Great day and great World Championships for Canada so far!     1/4 final: Freeman (AUS) - Gellenthien (USA) The Australian archer took the lead in the first end with a perfect 30, while Gellenthien shot two 9s to score 28 points. Things changed in the second end when Freeman shot 8-10-9. At that point Gellenthien scored 9-10-X10, tying his opponent’s first-half score (57-57). The American chose the third end to shoot a perfect end, leaving the Australian behind with a 28-point end. Freeman finished with a bad 8 in the last end, leaving the US archer to clinch the match and shoot the semi-finals on Sunday. Final score of this match: 115-110.   1/4 final: Damsbo (DEN) – Tataryn (CAN) Damsbo really seemed to find his grave today. He appeared solid shooting only 10s and 9s. The Dutch archer ended with 114 points despite a rising wind. Tataryn was not so good in handling the wind and suffered from 8s during his match. Damsbo won 114-108! Tataryn said: “There were some gusts of wind and I could not deal with them appropriately. I am a bit disappointed but Canada is shooting really well at these World Championships. Yesterday, the Recurve Men all shot above 1300 points which was phenomenal. Today, Trillius made it to the semi-finals. We’ll take one step at the time and we’ll now concentrate on the Compound Men Team events.     1/4 final: Duo (ESP) - Brasseur (FRA) This was a very interesting match! Brasseur led on 29 points after the first end with (versus 27 for Duo). In the second end, Duo shot 10-9-10, while Brasseur scored 9-X10-9 for an intermediate score of 56-57. The Spaniard got his act together and scored a perfect end (with two X10s), tying his opponent after the third end (86-86). The last end made all the difference, when Brasseur shot an 8, handing the victory to Duo on a plate (114-112).     FITA Communication
