Leipzig “LIVE” – Recurve Men Elimination Matches

Today archery fans could follow LIVE reports of the Recurve division archers who were competing in the elimination matches. Five rounds were contested at the Festwiese on Thursday, and after the Women in the morning, it was the Men’s turn to venture onto the field in the afternoon.

Besides World Championship medals, the Recurve archers were fighting to win places for next year’s Olympic Games in Beijing. For that, they had to try to be among the 16 best ranked archers in their category, but this will also depend on tomorrow’s team results.    1st round: Serrano (MEX) – Bodnar (ROU) Seeded no. 18 and bronze medallist at the recent World Cup in Antalya, Serrano had some ambition in Leipzig. A first round match is always difficult, especially with the tricky wind of Leipzig and Serrano was already behind 52-54 after six arrows. He lost two more points with his seventh arrow, when he shot an 8 in bad wind. His opponent took the opportunity to shoot quicker (in low wind) and had a 10. Serrano finished with X10-9-10, but that was too late... Bodnar beat the no. 18 seed 108-107! 1st round: Lee (KOR) – Cordero (PHI) The no. 1 seed Lee (KOR) was given a hard time in the first round. He was leading by only two points after six arrows, 54-52. However, Lee found his rhythm and his opponent could not keep pace. Lee shot X10-X10-X10-10-9-9 for a 58-point second end and a total of 112. Cordero could only shoot 7-8-9-7-10-X10 for 103 points. It is worth noting that an X10 means the archer hit the smallest part of the inner circle (6.1 cm only). Hitting the X10 is worth 10 points, but this can be decisive for the overall ranking of the archers.   2nd round: Lee (KOR) – Rai (IND) Lee’s life was made difficult again in this second round. This time his opponent was Rai. He shot 9-9-8-X-10-10 in the first end and was tied with Rai at 56 points. However, only the Korean could maintain the pace, scoring another 56 (9-9-10-10-9-9). Rai lost all chance of a win when he shot a 7 with his ninth arrow. Lee clinched victory by 112-108. 2nd round: Duenas (CAN) – Hristov (BUL) The young Duenas was facing Hirstov, an archer who can beat anyone on a good day. They started at a high level and were tied at 57 points after the first round. The second was more difficult for both of them. Duenas shot 8-9-7-9-10-10 for a total of 110 points. Hirstov looked set to win the match when he started his series with 9-X10-9, but his finish was disastrous with a 7-9-8. He scored 109 points for a cruel 1-point defeat. Duenas moved on! 2nd round: Ellison (USA) – Di Buo (ITA) Di Buo is a match-play specialist, but Ellison has been improving recently. This was another high-level match with Ellison starting with 9-9-9-10-X10-9 (56 points). Di Buo had 8-9-10-8-X10-10 (55 points) at that time. Ellison then took a 3-point advantage with his eighth arrow, scoring a 10 vs. Di Buo’s 8. Although Ellison did not finish extremely well with 8-8-9-9, this was still enough to mantain a 1-point victory!   2nd round: Ivashko (UKR) – Frangilli (ITA) This match was also tied after six arrows with 55 points for each archer. However, the Indoor World silver medallist, Ivashko, then turned in a superb display by shooting a 59 (10-10-10-9-10-10) to win the match by 114-105. The 2003 World Champion Frangilli was out, just like his team-mate Di Buo. Bad day for the Italians!     2nd round: Kuo (TPE) – Moriya (JPN) Kuo was seeded no. 3, but Moriya was the runner-up of the 2005 World Championships! The archer from Chinese Taipei had a 1-point advantage after six arrows (55-54). The Japanese then managed to come back in the second end with a strong X10-X10-X10-10-9-7 and tied the match at 110. This led the two archers to a shoot-off! They both shot a 10 with the first extra-arrow. Moriya finally had the last word and was victorious shooting another 10, whereas his opponent only managed a 9. 3rd round: Lee (KOR) – Duenas (CAN) It was the first time Duenas shoot again a Korean and he was actually leading after six arrows! Duenas had 10-10-10-7-9-9 (55) against Lee’s 10-9-10-9-8-8 (54). However, Lee had another of “his” 58 points in the second end that proved to be too much for Duenas who had 10-X10-8-X10-9-9. Final score: 112-111 for Lee.   3rd round: Tsyrempilov (RUS) – Badenov (RUS) The 2007 World Cup leader, Tsyrempilov, was playing his team-mate Badenov in this round. He took the advantage at the second arrow and was leading 55-53 at the halfway mark. The two Russians both finished strongly. Tsyrempilov had 9-10-10-10-9-9 and Badenov achieved 10-10-X10-10-7-9. It was eventually Tsyrempilov who prevailed 112-109.   3rd round: Furukawa (JPN) – Wunderle (USA) The difference againcame down to the first two arrows! Furukawa started with 9-10 while Wunderle had 8-9. For the rest of the match the two archers were really close to one another. Furukawa followed with 9-9-10-9, while Wunderle had 10-9-9-9. In the second end both archers shot consistently: six 9s each! Total score: 110-108 in favour of Furukawa.     3rd round: Ellison (USA) - Ivashko (UKR) Ellison lost it all with one arrow! He shot a 3 with his sixth arrow, probably running out of time in the first end. He was trailing 49-56 half-way and tried an impossible come-back, shooting 9-10-9-9-X10-X10 in the second end, but he could not fill the gap totally. Ivashko stayed solid and won 111-106.   3rd round: Marusau (BLR) – Velez Sanchez (MEX) After surviving a shoot-off in the previous round, Velez Sanchez was on the victory trail and faced Marusau. The archer from Belarus could not keep pace, scoring 49 in the first end. Velez Sanchez made it interesting, offering his opponent the possibility to come back, when he shot a 6 in the second end, but he finally won 105-103.   1/8 round: Lee (KOR) - Tsyrempilov (RUS) Tsyrempilov is shooting fantastically this year and is proved it one more time here in Leipzig. The Russian was trailing the no. 1 seed Lee by two points (54-56) after the first end. However, Lee, for once, dropped his guard in the second end and shot only 9-8-8-8-10-10 for a total of 109. Tsyrempilov shot a very good 9-10-8-10-10-10 and clinched the match 111-109!   1/8 round: Furukawa (JPN) – Ivashko (UKR) The no. 4 seed Furukawa had been shooting well all day until the seventh arrow of this match. He was leading his Ukrainian opponent 57-56 after six arrows. Suddenly, the accident! Furukawa shot a 1… and although the Japanese shot four 10s to conclude the match, he could not come back. Even more infuriating, as he finally just lost by one point (107-108)!

1/8 round: Petersson (SWE) – Xue (CHN) This was a close, intense match between two very experienced archers! Experience is indeed important in Leipzig, because of the tricky wind that keeps changing intensity and direction. It generally comes from the left side of the archers and this can cause them trouble, as most of them are right-handed. The wind then makes it difficult to keep the bow-arm steady while aiming at the centre.

In this match, both shooters had trouble to reaching the 10 ring, battling on every arrow. Petersson started with a 9-10-0-9-9-8 (54), while Xue had 9-8-9-10-10-9 (55). Xue increased his lead with a 10-8-10 end, whereas Petersson shot a 9-9-9. Although the Swedish archer finished with 8-10-8, this was not enough to recover. Xue shot 8-9-8 and held on to a 1-point victory at the end: 108-107!     1/8 round: Hojjatolah (IRI) – Im (KOR) The no. 2 seed Im only got off the yellow (9 or 10 point rings) one time in this match! This proved too much for no. 114 seed Hojjatolah and Im won 111-102.   However, Hojjatolah was very happy with his performance: “It’s actually great! I came down from the 114th seed all the way to the top 16 places and that certainly means an Olympic qualification! I can’t believe it! It is a dream that has come true! The competition is also going so quickly here that it is hard to realize what happened!”   NB: Archers start shooting four ends of three arrows from the quarter-finals on. 1/4 final: Tsyrempilov (RUS) – Kim (KOR) Beating one Korean is superb… But beating two Koreans in a row is just amazing! However, this is what it takes for an archer to have a chance to become a World Champion. Tsyrempilov started with a 29 and Kim with a 28. The Russian then increased the lead to 57-55 and kept it at 85-83. However, he lost his advantage with his tenth arrow shooting an 8 while Kim had a 10. Tsyrempilov got his act together and concluded with 10 and 9. This was better than Kim’s 8-8 and gave victory to Tsyrempilov (112-109).     1/4 final: Ivashko (UKR) – Terry (GBR) Both archers had had a great day until this match, but unfortunately only one was to go on... Ivashko had the best start with 10-9-9 versus Terry’s 9-8-8. They then both shot 29 and Ivashko took the lead by 57-54 after the second end. However, the Ukrainian had a bad start in the second half of the match with a 7-9-9. Terry took advantage of it, shooting 8-10-10. The match was tied at 82 and the last end (9-8-9 for each) did not change anything. They thus went to a shoot-off! Ivashko shot a 9 and Terry a 10 to earn a place in the semi-finals!     1/4 final: Cheng (MAS) - Wills (GBR) No. 51 Cheng seed and no. 43 seed Wills were the two big surprises of the day. They gave spectators another hard-fought match. Wills was leading 27-26 after three arrows. Cheng shot a 6 in the second end and was trailing 52-55. However, he came back in the third end, when he managed a 10-8-9 series, while Wills only shot 9-9-7 (79-80). Cheng then scored 9-10 and tied the match with his eleventh arrow at 98-98. The last arrow was decisive! Cheng shot a low 8 and Wills shot a 9. A second Briton is in the semi-final!

Wills said: “I actually broke my tab this morning and I must shoot with another one. I don’t have the same feeling at all with it. It’s just great that I reached the semi-final!

1/4 final: Xue (CHN) – Im (KOR) After defeating Petersson in the previous round, Xue had another difficult task ahead of him. The Korean Im shot a superb 58 in the first two ends. Although Xue was not shooting badly, he could only shot 56. The third end was more difficult with the wind getting stronger. It was decisive in this match. Xue scored 9-7-8, while Im got 8-9-9 to increase his lead to 84-80. The last end did not change anything and Im won 112-107. He will represent Korean in the semi-final!     FITA Communication
