Short interviews of three “Viva America” Scholarship holders competing at the Worlds in Merida
Merida – 18 October 2006
Mariangel Colmenares (VEN) – Recurve Junior Women - Final Ranking: 13 How do you feel after your victories in 1/32 and 1/16 elimination and defeat in 1/8 ? Very well, it is my first World Championships so I am very happy to have gone so far for my first time, although I lost my last match. How do you train at home ? I do two sessions a day of 7 hours in total from Monday to Friday and on Sundays just one session where I do also some gym and physical training and then shoot. What is your goal in Archery ? Participate in the Olympics and more ! What do you think of the level of the other participants ? It is quite good, they are all strong. Who is your idol in Archery ? The Korean Park Sung-Hyun !
Roberto Hernandez (COL) – Compound Junior Men - Final Ranking: 23 How do you feel after these great victories against a Korean and a Japanese ? Very good, I am very excited ! It is my first World Championships, although I also participated in the World Cup in San Salvador last June. Did the wind play a role in your shooting here ? The wind was quite strong, it was not easy to handle it, but I still could beat my opponents. I was trying to calm down my breath until I felt very relaxed and I knew I should release the arrow and the 10s were following ! Who is your idol in Archery ? The Dutch Peter Elzinga, although he is compound, I love his style of shooting !
Adrian Puentes (CUB) – Recurve Junior Men – Final Ranking: 26 How are you feeling? After a very good beginning, you’ve just lost this match ? Very well, it was a very good competition for me. I have shot a better score than I usually do, despite of the strong wind. I think it was a very successful event from a personal point of view and also from an organisational point of view. How do you train at home ? I train 5 days a week, 3 hours a day. At the beginning of the competition season we do mostly running, weightlifting and physical training, and as the competitions come closer we shoot more and more, until the weeks just before the competition, where we only go shooting. What is your objective in Archery ? World Champion and Olympic Champion ! What do you think of the level of the other participants here ? The level of competition is very high, a good quality of archers. That’s the reason why they are here ! Who is your idol in Archery ? Well, I have no favourite, but I like a lot the Korean style.
