Porec World Cup 2006 - Elimination Day
Lausanne
The Porec battle is On Porec - 11 May, 2006. Although the weather got much nicer on this side of the Mediterranean sea, there was no easy-going among the competitors for the beginning of the single elimination matches (12 arrows on each round - 120 pts max – winner goes on). The suspense lasted until the end of the day and the last quarter-final for individual archers. The semis and finals will take place on Saturday. Galiazzo strikes back
Qualified only on 41st position, Olympic Champion Marco Galiazzo (ITA) stroke back all the way to reach the semi-finals. In some sense, he is taking the spot of number 1 seed Tsyrempilov (RUS) who exited early in the second round. Another early retirement was the one from Godfrey (GBR) who lost in the sudden death shoot-out on the first round against Piatek (POL). On this side of the draw, the Indian Talukdar confirmed he is a raising power shooting consistently above 110 to reach the semi. On the lower bracket, Frangilli (ITA) wasn’t as successful with a second round exit. Number 6 seed, Peterson (SWE) reached the semi beating Rohrberg (GER) in the quarter 111 – 106 pts. The last quarter final of the men’s recurve and, in fact, of the whole day gave us a superb match between Haifeng Xue (CHN) and Ivashko (UKR). Tied at 111 after 12 arrows, they needed two extra arrows to finally find a winner. The number 2 seed Ukrainian prevailed.

Impressive during the qualifications the Chinese archers could not confirm in match play. Number 1 seed, Jailing Quian failed in quarter final vs Lionetti (ITA), seeded 25 (104 – 108 pts). The Italian will play Galinovskaya (RUS) in the semi. The Russian was almost shocked in the second round. After a poor game, she was tied at 97 pts with her opponent after 12 arrows. Fortunately she found her archery skills back during the shoot-out. Number 3 seed, Yu Hui (CHN) lost against Schaefer (GER) in the second round. The German then lost to Frigeri (ITA) who reached the semi despite her 46th seed ! Finally, 2nd seed Berezhna (UKR) could not beat her teammate Lobzhenidze in the second round as well. She lost in the sudden death shoot-out. Unfortunately for her, Lobzhenidze could not make it all the way, losing to Nasaridze (TUR) 104-105 pts in the quarter.
Dominique Genet hold on to its 1st seed
In the men's compound category, the Frenchman confirmed he is a in great shape here in Porec, notably eliminating Freeman (AUS) in the 1/8 of final. He then score an excellent 118pts in the quarter against Ochoa (MEX) to qualify for the semis. On Saturday, he will play Wilde (USA), seeded number 5. He had a tough had to beat Villi (CRO) in the 1/8 of final then the famous Lundin (SWE) in the quarter. Lundin had previously two great matches that he won 115-114. He disappointed the hopes of Hofer (SUI) and beat Sitar (SLO) in a "number 1 vs number 2 in the world" showdown !

Preels (BEL) had quiet a ride beating the solid Jimenez (ESA) in the first round, then top archer Boe (NOR) in "sudden-death shoot-out" (extra arrow, best score wins), then Haavisto (FIN) to finish up with a Dannish, Damsbo, in the quarter (118 vs 114). Emiel Custers (NED) was seeded only 43 but he proved he is one of the best in the world usually. He beat teammate Elzinga (NED) in the 1/8 of final then went on an exciting sudden death overtime vs Cousins (USA). They both had 115 pts after 12 arrows. No surprise in the women's compound
The top four seeds made it all the way to the semi-finals in the women's compound. Ochoa (MEX) will play Kazantseva-Bologova (RUS) on the top half of the draw. The Russian only had some troubles in the quarter defeating Collins (USA) during an extra shoot-out. In the second semi, Davis (USA) will play her teammate Van Natta. To note, the elimination of world number 1 Fabre (FRA) and Soemod (DEN) in the second round, as well as the ones from Bastos (MEX) and Willems (BEL) in the 1/8 of final. On Friday, the team competition, all the way to the finals, will take place ! Didier Miéville
